Church Women’s Organization To Host Community ‘Free-bay’ Event

The LDS Logandale Stake Relief Society is hard at work on a summer project which is meant to help community members in want. This day of service which Stake Relief Society leaders are calling ‘Freebay – Neighbors Helping Neighbors’ is planned for August 5-6. But they are asking for help from the entire community in the weeks leading up to that event.

“Difficult economic times have left many in our valley in want,” said Mary Lou Whitney, first counselor in the Logandale Stake Relief Society. “In the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors, we’re asking everyone to go through their homes and save whatever they would normally donate to charity from now until the event, along with bags and boxes.”

On Friday, August 5, community members can bring all of the items collected to Fine Arts Building at the Logandale Fairgrounds. There the items will be sorted according to category and put on display for the event.

Then on Saturday, August 6, the building will be open to the community to come and shop through the items for free.

“This idea has been several times very successfully throughout the Vegas valley, and we know it can be a great help here in our valley as well,” Whitney said. “It is our hope that it will help those hardest hit by the recession to be able to obtain school clothes and other necessities for their families.”

Whitney stated that anything and everything can be donated except mattresses and bed pillows. “We welcome all donations… clothing, TVs, entertainment centers, wall pictures, kitchen items, shoes…everything,” Whitney said. “All we ask is that the items donated be freshly laundered and stain free and in complete working order. Please, nothing broken or beyond its usefulness – nothing that should be put out with the trash.”

Though the event is being coordinated by the Stake Relief Society, Whitney said that the hope is that the entire community will get involved. “We would like all of Moapa Valley to join us to make this a success,” she said.
