The Clark County Commission unanimously approved a proposal on August 16 to adjust the Commission district boundaries according to population numbers from the 2010 U.S. Census.
The redistricting ordinance brought all of rural northeastern Clark County into a single district: District B represented by Commissioner Tom Collins.
Previously the northeast rural communities had been divided with Overton and Bunkerville falling within the boundaries of District B under Commissioner Steve Sisolak, and Logandale, Moapa and Mesquite represented by Collins.
Both Collins and Sisolak were required to give up significant portions of voting population in the redistricting adjustment.
Sisolak’s District A was required to lose the most, having roughly 80,000 people taken from that district. In addition to the areas of northeast County, District A also gave up Boulder City, Lake Las Vegas area and other urban areas in Henderson and the southern Las Vegas valley.
The adjustment to Collins’ District B was more moderate, being required to lose 20,000 in population. District B gained around 1200 people from the northeast County areas. But Collins was required to give up significant blocks of voters in North Las Vegas.
Districts in the urban core were required to gain significant population in the redistricting effort. Commissioner Lawrence Weekly’s District D and Commissioner Chris Giuncigliani’s District E grew by roughly 70,000 people each.
