The Moapa Valley High School (MVHS) gym was filled with young cheerleaders last week at the annual Junior Cheerleading Camp sponsored by the MVHS Cheerleading squad. In attendance at this year’s camp were 85 girls from ages 3 to 13.

“Attendance has been fantastic this year,” said MVHS Varsity Cheer Coach Shannon Zobrist. “We doubled what we had last year. There seems to be a real interest for cheerleading in the community.”

The young cheerleaders were divided up into age groups for the camp. The largest group was in the pre-school 3-5 year old range. Other divisions were ages 6-8, ages 9-11 and middle school age girls.

Members of the MVHS Cheerleading squad led the training and taught the younger girls skills including tumbling, jumps, stunts, chants, dances and even sign painting.

“The girls enrolled here get to do everything that the older girls do during the school year,” Zobrist said.

The annual camp is meant as a fundraiser for the MVHS Cheerleading program. “It helps us pay for team equipment and supplies and does a lot to offset the cost of the program for the girls’ parents,” Zobrist said.

The MVHS Cheer program is made up of two teams. The Varsity team, coached by Zobrist, is made up of 12 girls. The J.V. team, led by new coach Alex Mulcock has 10 members.
