Even as the school year ended in June, the local Parks and Rec Summer “Fun” Program began the following Monday morning. Parents enrolled their kids for the eight weeks to come play games, eat snacks, make crafts, and go swimming.
Both Logandale and Overton sites experienced strong attendance. Favorite activities included games such as hockey, Racquet Smack-it, Bump Out, jump rope, and Tag.
A favorite among the leaders and kids was the basic game of dodge ball. Since there are several variations to the game like Medic Ball, Thompson Ball, Sniper Ball, and War Ball, the kids did not tire of playing. These games allowed the kids to be active during the hot summer months, and do what kids do best, play!
Besides playing games, kids enjoyed cooking. This offered a chance to display originality. The first week the kids made fruit people out of various fruit, marshmallows, and toothpicks. Some even created animals and aliens. Easy treats like Pigs in a Blanket, personal pizza, sundaes, and Dirt Cups were also fun to make, but more importantly they were yummy eat!
Although crafts are generally a favorite with the girls, the boys showed ingenuity in doing crafts. They incorporated a much loved video game into their creations. One young man even brought back his Grassy Gertie craft the next week to show the leaders how tall his grass “hair” grew.
The girls of course loved working with beads, drawing, and painting.
Once a week Summer Rec. also took advantage of the local pools. This was always a much anticipated activity. The pools provided swimming gear to those who needed them, allowing everyone the opportunity to cool off.
During the final week of Rec. the kids went on a field trip to the see the film Winnie the Pooh at the Pioneer Theater in Overton. On the very last day of Rec. the kids enjoyed a pizza party.
