It only took 11 carries for Jace Billingsley to rack up 336 yards and five touchdowns as Lowry pounded Battle Mountain their 2A neighbor in the opening weekend in high school football on Friday night. The final score was 70-6.
Jonathan Hernandez carried the ball 9 times for 103 and a touchdown. Quarterback Michael Billingsley rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown and threw for 53 yards on 3-5 passing and a touchdown.
Fernley travelled to Yerington to play ROP a 2A league foe and destroyed the Rams 49-6 on opening night. Jeremy Ruiz rushed for 187 yards on 19 carries including the first play of the season when he busted one up the middle for a 73 yard touchdown. It was the first of seven first half touchdowns that Fernley would score.
Quarterback Kenny Bradley ran for three and threw for another in the rout.
Sparks hosted the Yerington Lions and were beaten 25-24 by their 2A opponent. The Lions scored the go ahead touchdown with eight minutes to go in the game breaking a tie of 18’’s.
Sparks then went on a 17 play drive which finished 84 yards later when Vasquez took it in from two yards out. On the extra point a Sparks’s player was driven back where he was pushed into the kick and blocked the extra point giving the Lions the win.
Yerington played in the 3A two years ago, but forfeited the last half of the season. The Coach claimed the 3A was too tough for them because the players were getting injured.
The Lions jumped out to a 12-0 lead then 18-12 before Sparks tied the game with nine minutes left to play in the game.
Sparks never had the lead.
Dayton hosted the defending 2A state champions Pershing County and went down 8-0 in the first quarter as their new offense the “double wing” just could never get started. So Dayton used two passes one of which covered 70 yards to beat the Mustangs 24-14. Dayton tied the score at 8-8 in the second quarter when Sean DeRubertis broke a 32 yard run.
South Tahoe beat Portal High School in Portal 35-12 to get their first win of the season. Jacob Stowell rushed for 4 touchdowns as Quarterback Tyler Nesbitt threw for the other. The Vikings stopped Portal on 1st and goal from the four yard line.
Tahoe will open their new field next week as they take on Fallon.
Truckee, Spring Creek, Elko and Fallon all had their bye weeks this past week.
Next week’s games are: Truckee at Dayton, Fallon at South Tahoe, Fernley at Elko, Lowry at Wooster and Spring Creek at Sparks.
In the south Boulder City is following the footsteps of the north and taking on the 2A where they played and beat The Meadows 50-12. The Eagles rushed for 504 yards as Corbit Fleming rushed for 135 on nine carries and a touchdown. Xavier Steele rushed for 109 and two touchdowns.
The Eagles travel to Eldorado next week to play the Sun Devils. This is Eldorado’s first game of the season.
Virgin Valley played their first 4A opponent in Las Vegas against the Valley Vikings and destroyed their foe 43-6. The Bulldogs travel back into Vegas to play the Sierra Vista Mountain Lions on Friday. This is Sierra Vista’s first game of the season.

South Tahoe played Portola H.S., in Portola, CA.
