Moapa Valley Progress
The Moapa Valley Pirates left everything on the course at their first cross country meet of the season. The annual Labor Day Classic was held at Palo Verde Saturday, September 3. This annual race has competitors from throughout the region coming in the hundreds.
With Moapa Valley teams in rebuilding mode, this race was an individual focus for each runner on the team. Every person was racing themselves and pushing to start the season off with a great time.
The first person to race was sophomore DJ Carter in the freshman/sophomore female race. She was the only competitor from Moapa to run in the race and was the first to set the standard of performance. DJ sprinted 60th across the finish line with a time of 25:22.2.
Next up was the freshman/sophomore male race. Newcomers Skylar Whipple and Marshall Potts ran together and didn’t dissappoint. Skylar Whipple ended in 36th with a time of 18:32.9. Marshall was close behind him with a time of 20:43.6 placing 82nd.
In the Junior/Senior girls race. Kenna McMurray ran with a time of 25:28.3 placing 68th.
In the Junior/Senior boys’ race junior Ryan Leachman and senior Tyler (Hercules) Winzenreid competed together. Winzenreid finished in 87th with a time of 19:17.0 and Leachman finished with a time of 23:23.7 at 118.
“The first meet is always an oppurtunity to see what kind of potential we have and what I see excites me,” said Girls Cross Country Coach Heather Humes. “We have a lot of potential and it’s going to be a great year.”
