3A State Football Round-up

When Truckee traveled to Elko last Friday, it figured to be a barn burner, pitting last year’s first and second place teams against each other. But Truckee made short work of the Indians by scoring 20 points in the first quarter. They then held on to a 27-6 victory.

Quarterback Pat Shaffer threw three interceptions with his two touchdowns and 150 yards in the air. Elko’s Fransico Lievanos rushed for 75 yards for the Indians. Truckee’s Cole Roberts lead Truckee’s ground attack with 96 yards and had two touchdowns.

One receiving and one rushing. The rushing touchdown was a 61 yarder when Elko had nine players on the field.

Truckee hosts Sparks at Surprise Stadium on Saturday while the Indians head to Fallon in another key game.

Truckee is 2-0 on the season while Elko drops to 1-1.

Dayton traveled to Fallon as the Green Wave was beaten by the Dust Devils 26-13 in a surprise. Fallon had five turnovers, three fumbles and two interceptions one taken back for a touchdown. Tyler Firestone had 148 yards rushing to lead the Dust Devil running game.

In the beginning of the second quarter Fallon senior safety Frank DeBrag and Dayton Eddy Morales collided helmet to helmet both dropping to the ground. Morales got up. But Debrag was removed from the field on a stretcher and then taken to the hospital with a back injury. He was moving his fingers and was listed in stable condition.

Dayton is 2-1 and 1-1 in league play. They play at Lowry Friday. The Wave hosts Elko Friday night.

Lowry continued their assault on the lower portion of the northern 3A with a complete dismantling of South Tahoe 72-21 on the mountain. Jace Billingsley ran 20 times for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Mike Billingsley was 9-14 with 155 yards and a touchdown in the Buckaroo air attack. Lowry had 643 yards total offense. In addition to Jace, Johnny Hernandez had 108 yards on twelve carries. He had two touchdowns. Tyler Nezbitt scored all three Viking touchdowns. He had six carries for 106 yards and 65 yards passing. He also had one catch for 53 yards. There were seven touchdowns scored total in the fourth quarter for 48 points by both teams.

Three for Tahoe and four for Lowry. Lowry is 3-0 and hosting Dayton this week. South Tahoe is 1-2 and hosts Wooster.

Fernley traveled to Sparks and beat the Railroaders 31-25 in a close game till the end. Quarterback Ken Bradley threw two touchdown passes and ran for one more. Fernley did its best to give the game to Sparks, Fernley fumbled three times in the final five minutes. They retained possession each time as the ball rolled out on bounds every time. Jeremy Ruiz had 75 yards rushing on twelve carries.

Fernley 2-1 goes across the state to Spring Creek this week while Sparks 0-3 feeds Truckee Saturday.

Spring Creek hosted Wooster and beat the Colts 17-7.

Virgin Valley played its first home game on Friday and beat Shadow Ridge 22-16. Tostenson caught two touchdowns the first to open the game and the last to win the game for the Bulldogs. The Mustangs had the lead at 14-6 at half and then gave up a 95 yard kick return for a touchdown coming out of the half. Urias’s run on the extra point tied the score at 14. In the fourth quarter a snap went over Urias and out the back of the end zone for a safety. With 4:36 left the 12 play 80 yard Bulldog drive ended with the go ahead touchdown and win. Virgin Valley had 68 yards rushing and 73 yards passing. That’s 141 total offense. Shadow Ridge had 147 rushing and 27 yards passing.

The Bulldogs go to Cheyenne next week to play the undefeated Desert Shields who are 2-0 with wins over Legacy and Cimarron.

Boulder City played Green Valley at home and saw a lot of Love Friday night. Aaron Love of the Gators scored three touchdowns leading Green Valley to a 35-16 win over the Eagles. The Eagle scores came in the form of a 1 yard run by Miller in the 2nd quarter and a 45 yard run by Steel in the 3rd quarter. Boulder City had 158 yards rushing and 18 yards in the air.

Boulder is 1-2 and has a bye next week. They host the Rattlers of Mohave on the 23rd.
