LETTER: A Glimpse At Moapa Valley From The Outside

Once again last week I was reminded why I love the people who live in Moapa Valley.

As many of you know I have accepted the daunting challenge of turning around Chaparral High School in Las Vegas. Like everywhere I have worked, the kids are incredible. They do face unique and overwhelming challenges.

When I spoke to the coaches of all of our sports I asked them what I could do to help their programs. Their answer was quick and to the point. “Feed our kids.” This was a huge surprise to me. I was looking at their meager and outdated equipment as well as antiquated facilities. Their concern was that their students didn’t have the financial means, or caring parents, that would allow them to eat before games and practices. After having served the students of Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley this was a new paradigm for me.

When I brought Chaparral High School to play football here it was for the rich and unique experience it would afford them. The opportunity to experience the “Americana” that we live on a daily basis. Most of the students in the band, on the cheer squad, and on our teams have never been to our valley. When I brought the team to my home for a bonfire after the game most of them had never experienced a bonfire, or fed horses, or looked at the stars on a quiet night. One player seriously asked when the police were coming to arrest me for setting my burn pile ablaze. It was a beautiful experience seeing what I take for granted through their unexperienced eyes.

I would like to thank the Moapa Valley High School Booster Club for feeding my players after the game. They did this on their own volition, without being asked or prodded, and without knowing that simply eating is a daily crisis for many of my players. They came over to my house, set up the food and drinks and took care of my kids. Thank you. It is all about the kids, and you get it.

Just a gentle reminder, we only have one opportunity to make a first impression on the world outside of Moapa Valley. Athletics are the front porch of the community and school. Please continue to make the most of this opportunity as young athletes and their families leave Las Vegas for the first time for a taste of what we have.

Doc Moses was kind in his words of support for our efforts at Chaparral High School. His leadership, vision, hard work and energy continues to serve Moapa Valley in an incredible manner. With the quiet and undaunted support of “Good Folks” like Doc, Richard and Brian from the outside as well as those supporting us on the inside we will be successful.
