The MVHS Cross Country teams have hit the ground running, competing in two more races on the second week of the season.

The first race, hosted by Desert Pines, was held Wednesday, September 7, at Freedom Park in Las Vegas. The girls’ team of Victoria Karvonen, DJ Carter, and Kenna McMurray was first to race. They ran hard against 4A schools.

They were followed on the course by the boys team. Freshman Skyler Whipple led the entire pack in the race for the first mile but was elbowed out at the end to come in 3rd place overall.

The second race of the week was held on Saturday, September 10, at Veteran’s Park in Boulder City. This is traditionally one of the largest races of the year with teams from Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California coming to compete.

Victoria Karvonen competed in the freshman/sophomore girls’ race of 2.5 miles with a time of 22:47.

Next, Devin Mortensen, Markus Enosa, Clifford Ely-Scott, and Dakota Shyface competed in the Freshman/Sophmore boy’s race. Clifford Ely-Scott sprinted across the finish line to get a time of 18:17.9. Markus Enosa came in at 20:02.9. Dakota Shyface finished at 22:55.0 with Devin Mortenson right behind him.

The varsity girls then ran a longer course of 3.1 miles through the park. DJ Carter came in with a time of 26:37.7. Kenna McMurray finishing with a time of 28:52.2.

Girls’ Cross Country coach Heather Humes remarked, “We had a great day today. It was a tough course out in Boulder City, but the kids all did great! Hard work pays off!”

In the varsity boys race, Freshman Skyler Whipple led Moapa with a 21:12.3. Tyler Winzenreid finished with a jump to get a time of 21:59.3. Tyler Reynolds finished at 23:25.9, with freshman Marshall Potts sprinting at the end to get 24:18.5. Garrett Traasdahl finished right behind Potts with a time of 24:35.2. The varsity boys finished 5th overall in their division.

The girls don’t have enough runners to compete in the team events. The team is still looking to recruit girls to run.
