Northern 3A

At Fernley the Spring Creek Spartans used two fumbles and an interception which they turned into touchdowns to win the game, 40-19.

Fernley’s Ken Bradley threw for 349 yards and 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in the loss.

Spring Creek had a total of three interceptions and two fumbles to up their season total to 13 takeaways.

On offense the Spartans were pretty impressive themselves with 350 yards rushing on the night. Nick Cedebaca rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries one of 65 yards and the other of 59. The fullback on offense plays defensive tackle on defense. His buddy Nick Hoyos rushed for 135 and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Spring Creek is in a tie with Lowry and Truckee for first place in the northern 3A. They will play Truckee next week in an elimination game from the undefeated status.

In South Tahoe the Vikings were able to corral the independent Colts from Wooster 41-21.

South Tahoe is now 2-2 while the Colts who are still living in the glory days of yesteryear are 0-3.

The Vikings Stowell had 489 all-purpose yards being a one man wrecking crew and scoring 4 touchdowns. One of them being a 73 yard run and another run for 95 yards. Wooster couldn’t score from inside the red zone all night using all four downs twice. Once inside the five after a fumble.

In Fallon the Green Wave scored on a 75 yard run by Shawntrell Hubbard for a touchdown. But they didn’t sniff the end zone again after that as the Elko Indians beat Churchill county 21-7. Hubbard had 178 yards rushing as the Green Wave gave up two turnovers in the loss. Francisco Lievanos had 217 yards rushing on the night to carry the Indians to a 3-1 record while the Green Wave drops to 1-2. Fallon travels to Sparks this week.

In Winnemucca the Lowry Buckaroos ran wild over Dayton as Jace Billingsley rushed for 236 yards on 18 carries and 4 touchdowns. Lowry beat Dayton 47-24.

Lowry scored 13 points in the 1st quarter and allowed only five Dust Devil plays in the quarter to lead 13-0 after one quarter. Lowry then scored 21 points in the 2nd quarter to Dayton’s 7 and built a 34-7 lead at half time.

Dayton had five turnovers to help the Buckaroos control the game.

Lowry put it on cruise control for the second half with 14 more points to win and take their undefeated record to 4-0.

Dayton is 2-2 and plays South Tahoe at home next week while Lowry travels to Elko to try and avenge last season’s home loss to the tribe 20-19. This will be Lowry’s first real challenge of the year and will be the game of the week.

In Truckee last Saturday the Wolverines destroyed the Railroaders from Sparks, 55-3. Truckee had scored 48 points by the half. Cole Roberts and Jake Pettit each scored three touchdowns. Roberts scored two on consecutive possessions to start the 2nd half as he picked off the Sparks quarterback and took the ball back for scores. The first for 65 yards and the second for 50 yards.

Roberts, first score came on a 75 yard run. Pettit had scores of 5, 46 and the final one of the game for 80 yards.

In total Truckee ran the ball 22 times for 345 yards while they passed for 79 yards on 8-13 and touchdown. Sparks was held to 81 yards on 29 carries with a 45 yard field goal as their only compensation for their work.

Sparks was 12-23 for 81 yards and three interceptions in the air.

Next week Truckee hosts Spring Creek as both teams are unbeaten at 3-0. Last season Truckee beat the Spartans 41-0 at Spring Creek. This game will be huge setting up the run for seeding in the playoffs. Every game counts for these northern teams.

Southern 3A

In the south there are only two games for each team that really matter in the battle for the 1st or 2nd place spots. The 3rd place team is eliminated.

This year the North’s 2nd seeded team travels south to play the top seed in the semi-finals. The North’s 1st and 3rd seeds will play each other in the semi-finals.

Friday night Moapa will resume its season after a bye week and travel to Del Sol who is ranked 6th in Las Vegas. Last week the Dragons played Moapa’s homecoming opponent Silverado and beat the Skyhawk’s 28-24.

Del Sol came back from 14 down at half for the win at Silverado. Chris Marshall scored on runs of 43, 5 and 1 yards and picked off a pass to set up the go-ahead touchdown. The Dragons are 3-0.

The Skyhawk’s are now 1-2 on the season. Silverado’s Izaiah Thurmon rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. Del Sol’s Marshall rushed for 89 yards on 13 carries for the game, and led Del Sol in the third quarter with two touchdowns after a blocked punt and a Silverado fumble. Silverado outgained Del Sol 250-35 in yards in the first half and 377-177 overall.

Virgin Valley traveled to Cheyenne last Friday and were pounded, then pounded, and pounded again by the Desert Shields who will join the Division IA next year. The final score was 62-24.

Junior running back Myloe Lewis ran for 280 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries to lead the 8th ranked Desert Shields 3-0 past the Dawgs who drop to 3-1. Senior Tyler Spight also ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, and Senior Kenneth Counts also carried the ball 11 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Humberto Urias completed 16 of 31 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns as the Dawgs abandoned the run and went to the air trying to muster up some offense.

The score was tied after the 1st quarter at 7 apiece. The second quarter saw Spight score twice. The first was from a yard out. The second was from 21 yards out.

Virgin Valley stayed close going into the half as Teerlink caught a pass from a yard out to cut the lead back to 8.

In the 3rd quarter Cheyenne had two touchdowns on runs of 34 and 76 yards to take a commanding led.

Cheyenne didn’t let up as they scored three more times in the fourth. First was a 1 yard run. Then Dee Bowler caught a 23 yard touchdown pass. Finally a 19 yarder and then an 8 yarder sent the Dawgs back to the pound with the loss.

Virgin Valley had 140 yards on the ground and 279 on 16-31 and the two scores through the air.

Cheyenne had 513 yards on the ground and 14 yards on 1-1 passing in the air.

Virgin Valley starts a three game home stand Friday night when they host the Pahrump Valley Trojans who broke a 30 game losing streak two weeks ago when they beat Western. Next week they will host Boulder City. Then they host Green Valley the next week before heading into the Moapa week at Moapa on Oct. 14.

Here are the standings so far this season. North: Lowry 4-0, Truckee 3-0, Spring Creek 3-0. Elko 2-1, Dayton 2-2, Fernley 2-2, South Tahoe 2-2, Fallon 1-2, Sparks 0-4. South: Moapa Valley 3-1 0-0, Virgin Valley 3-1 0-0, Boulder city 1-2 0-0.
