The Pirate youth football teams played a full morning of games on Saturday, October 1 at the Mack Lyon Middle School field.

The Pirate eighth grade team completely routed a Canyon View team that had travelled from Cedar City. The final score was 30-0 Pirates.

The local team came out strong from the start scoring every time they had possession of the ball in the first quarter. By the half the team was up 18-0.

The team scored twice more in their next two possessions after the half.

The team’s offensive line held together well which helped Trystan Deal and RJ Hubert score two touchdowns each.

After that, head coach Dennis Whitmore said that he started mixing up the positions where people played.

“In that second half, we started letting people play in spots where they don’t normally play,” Whitmore said. “The kids had a lot of fun with that.”

The eighth grade team is now sitting at a 3-1 record for the season thus far. They opened their season with a 20-6 win against Cedar City. The following week they lost to Desert Hills of St. George with a score of 16-7. Then they squeaked by a Pine View team, also of St. George, beating them 7-6.

“So far a highlight of this year’s team has been our defensive team,” Whitmore said. “They have had a very impressive start only giving up two touchdowns in the first four games.”

Whitmore explained that opponents had scored two other touchdowns against the team due to offensive fumbles.

Whitmore gave credit to his defensive coaching staff including Brent May and Mike Cope as well as other coaches Kyle Cox and Ryan Frei.

“We are just excited to be playing in the Football U.S.A league this year,” Whitmore added. “The boys are playing well and we are looking forward to making it to the championships.”

In other games played on Saturday, the Pirate 6th grade team won against Hurricane 14-6. The 4th grade team won against Pineview 18-12. The seventh graders lost to Canyon View with a score of 0-28. The 5th grade team also lost to Canyon View with a score of 0-38.
