State 3-A Football Roundup

Moapa Valley Progress

As the football season progresses one thing is for sure. Competition in the north is closer than it has been in recent years.

Truckee has dominated the north the last three years making the state finals and playing Moapa Valley in all three. But last weekend’s games proved that the old powerhouses are not going to have it so easy this year.

At Truckee last Saturday the Green Wave of Churchill County (Fallon) came closer to beating the Wolverines than anyone thus far. Fallon took a 7-0 lead on a five yard quarterback keep, ending a 51 yard drive. Trevor Aludridge took a punt back 65 yards for the Wolverines in the beginning of the second quarter to the end zone as Truckee tied the score 7-7.

Fallon dominated the time of position by running over twice the amount of plays Truckee had run, 38 to 16 as they took a 14-7 lead into the locker room at half.

Fallon’s second score came on another quarterback keeper with 4:18 to go in the half.

Fallon caught the Wolverines off guard throwing the ball instead of running it as they had all season. Truckee held the Green Wave scoreless in the second half. The offense tied the score for the second time when Englert took it in from 3 yards and then won it with 3:46 left in the game when Curtis took it in from 5 yards out.

Tyler Curtis led the Wolverines in rushing with 132 yards on 28 carries. In passing, Pat Shaffer was 4-12 for 21 yards and a pick.

Truckee had 184 yards total offense.

Truckee shut down Fallon’s Shawntell Hubbard who had 10 carries for 26 yards while Quarter back Dirickson threw for 166 yards on 15 for 35 attempts and two picks. Maybe the Wolverines were looking past this game in anticipation for Friday’s game with Lowry in Winnemucca. Friday’s game has been anticipated all season long. The two northern powerhouses will butt heads for 1st or 2nd place and the trip south for the semi-finals.

At Fernley the Lowry Buckaroos beat Fernley 26-14. Jace Billingsley had a total of 73 yards rushing on 19 carries. The fewest yards he’s had all season. He had two rushing touchdowns one for 35 yards and the other for 20. He also had one on the receiving.

Dayton beat the Railroaders at Sparks after starting out with 27 points to start the game en route to a 47-25 thrashing of the Railroaders. Sparks quarterback, Geovanni Vasquez, threw for 154 yards and three touchdowns on 14-28 passing for the game.

Cody Yeater rushed for 147 yards for the Dust Devils and three touchdowns. Dayton is 5-3 while Sparks is 1-7.

Dayton hosts Spring Creek in a game they need in order to stay in contention for third place and a home game in the play offs.

At Wooster the Colts scared the Indians from Elko by having a surprise lead at the half of 14-6. The final touchdown of the half came when quarter back Josh Carnemolla hit Calvin Dermody for 84 yards and the score.

In the second half the Indians came to life and scored 32 points to Wooster’s 7 in the second half to keep the Colts winless.

Elko’s Lavanos rushed for 223 yards on 38 carries. He had 2 touchdowns one receiving and one rushing. Elko had 373 yards total offence while Wooster had 287.

At Spring Creek the Spartans destroyed the Vikings of South Tahoe 60-12 in a must win for the Spartans. Spring Creek was led by Ryan Hoyos who ran for 159 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Jacob Stowell led the Vikings with a kick return for 90 yards and a touchdown. He ran for a total of 132 yards before re-injuring an injury he sustained last week.

Keep in mind that Truckee All State FB/LB, #2, has missed the last two games with an injury. Fallon came out with a 4 WR set, believing they could not run against Truckee. Once the Truckee defense was adjusted, Fallon did not score again.
Fallon is a good football team with very good linemen on both sides of the ball. They are getting better each week.
Both Lowry and Truckee have shown potential “chinks in the armor” recently.

    LTG,
We will take any “chink in the armor” by Truckee that we can get!! Last year your TE/DE #20 was injured and missed games, but still no one could even score on you guys.
The last 2 years it was a shocker if anyone up North could actually score on Truckee. This year, both Fallon and Fernley actually had a lead on Truckee. That shows some “chinks” although they are very small ones!!
I think Lowry is too heavy dependent on one player and if you shut or control him they will struggle. It seems as though Truckee is evenly balanced and can run and pass to a variety of different players. It is that reason why I think Truckee will beat Lowry by 3 touchdowns 28-7. Whats your prediction LTG??

In 2009 Moapa Valley played the Fernley Vaqueeros in the opening game with out all state linebacker jake pearce. and lost. moapa faced ferndale again in the semi final and crushed them, and #35 jake pearce was playing. what im getting at, is when your #1 linebacker and rusher is out it makes a huge impact. jake pearce is one of the best to play in the 3a, so is roberts. if roberts was playing probably woulda been 40-14. As far as lowry… just another team in truckees way

moapa is better than lowry. i personally feel lowry is OVERRATED! truckee vs moapa state game.
