In a crowded field of choices, Mitt Romney is best suited to win the 2012 presidential election and return the country’s economy to good health.

That was the message from the Republican frontrunner’s wife, Ann Romney to area residents during a visit on Thursday, October 20. She made a stop in Mesquite that day and spoke to a full house at the Falcon Ridge Golf Club.

Romney joked about this now being her husband’s second run for the White House.

“At the end of the last campaign I swore that we were never going to be doing that again,” she said. “But my husband said: You said that after every one of your pregnancies. And I have five sons.”

Romney spoke fondly of her family.

“My sons have all grown to be good men who love their wives and are good dads for their children,” she said. “I consider that my greatest accomplishment.”

Romney said that, through all the years of raising their children, she always felt her husband’s strong support and involvement in his family. She said that, above all else, Mitt always measured his life on how successful he has been as a husband and father.

“He would always remind me that what I was doing (as a mother) was more important that his job,” Romney said. “He would say: ‘A job is temporary, families are forever.’ That was great encouragement.”

She shared her experience with various health conditions over the recent years. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the late 1990s and with breast cancer about two years ago.

“We cannot escape this life without challenges,” she said. “We all have our own. Some of you may be suffering from health issues as well. I’ve had my share.”

She spoke about how her husband’s support helped her deal with the challenges of MS.

“It is such a fatiguing disease and there are some days when you are unable to function or hardly able to get out of bed,” Romney said. “But Mitt was great during that time. He told me that we were in this fight together and he was by my side the whole way.”

Romney said that it was her husband’s support that helped her find the will to fight her diseases.

“We are in difficult times,” Romney said. “We are in stormy seas and frankly, I think it’s going to be that way for a while. We need someone who can guide us through.”

She said that her husband was well suited to turn things around in the country. She talked about his experience in turning companies around and in turning around the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games.

“He has had success as the governor of the state of Massachusetts,” Romney said, “coming into office with a $3 billion budget deficit and leaving four years later with a balanced budget and a $2 billion rainy day fund.

“He can’t wait to get his hands on Washington. Washington is broken. It is broken and it needs someone to get in there and turn it around; someone who actually knows how to do it, who’s done it before and has a proven record.”

She asked the attendees to consider supporting Mitt during the Nevada Republican caucus and then again, after his nomination, in the general election against Barack Obama.

  1. Old Romney, the multi-millionaire, in his own caring words: “Dick Cheney is the kind of person I’d like to have for VP a person of wisdom and judgment”. This is not the man i invision saving our country from the fiscal and social issues that we face. His views are at times un-democratic and i would hate to imagine my america in his hands.
