In Fallon the Green Wave, with 2nd string quarterback Dylan Tedford, shut out Lowry 24-0 holding the Buckaroos to just 94 yards total offence. They held Jace Billingsley, the state’s leading rusher to 30 yards on 12 carries. The offense that has lit up teams for as much as 70 points didn’t show. Lowry had only 6 touches during the third quarter as the wave controlled the ball keeping the Lowry offense off the field.
Fallon’s Frank de Braga rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries while Shawntrell Hubbard rushed for another 92 and a touchdown on 24 carries to lead the Wave to the upset win.
Fallon heads to Elko the 3rd seed for the first round of the playoffs.
Lowry hosts Spring Creek.
In Fernley, it was a trip to Truckee and Surprise Stadium that was on the line. For the loser, a chance to lick their wounds and start the countdown until next season. Fernley won this one 34-14 and ended the season for Dayton.
Jeremy Ruiz ran for 200 yards and started the game off with a 57 yard touchdown for Fernley. Then he ended any thoughts of a Dayton comeback with a 42 yard score to start the 4th quarter.
Fernley is 3-5 and 5-5 overall winning the 6th seed. Dayton is also 3-5 and 5-5 but with the loss loses the head-to-head tiebreaker with Fernley; and so goes home.
In Sparks for the “I don’t care game”, Wooster destroyed the Railroaders 49-7.
The big news here wasn’t about the game, but that Wooster is now petitioning the NIAA to join the 3A in football only. At the end of last season the Colts fired the head football coach because he was vocal about he’s belief the school would be better served if they dropped down to the 3A.
In Spring Creek a rivalry game in which the Spartans have won for six years in a row was spirited and compelling to the final minute as Elko held off the Spartans in the final 1:01 with an interception in the end zone on 4th and goal from the three. Spring Creek had three attempts from the five yard line before the ball was tossed to the corner and picked off by Matt Rigby who had, just minutes before, fumbled the ball at the Elko 33 setting up the dramatics which ended the game.
Francisco Lievanos led the Indians in rushing with 183 yards. Ryan Hoyos led the Spartans with 143 yards. Lievanos had the first touchdown of the game with a 49 yarder. Spring Creek followed with a 95 yard kickoff return for their score by Josh Hull. Lievanos also had a five yard touchdown on fourth and goal.
Elko threw only once the whole game. They rushed for 269 yards. Elko finished 7-2 in a tie with Lowry but lost in the head-to-head tiebreaker so is the third seed and will host Fallon.
In Truckee the Wolverines hammered the South Tahoe Vikings ending the helpless Vikings season 61-22 and sending them home.
The score was 14-14 after the first quarter.
It was all Truckee after that as they went on a 47 point rampage that included a Pettit 45 yard run and an Auldridge 52 yard punt return for a touchdown. Pettit had three touchdowns on the day.
South Tahoe’s Stowell started the game with an 80 yard run for the first score of the game. He had one more touchdown after Truckee tied the score when he punched in a one yarder.
The Truckee win streak is at 33 and counting as the Wolverines will host sixth seeded Fernley Saturday in the first round of the state playoffs.
In Las Vegas, at Coronado High School, Virgin Valley were beaten badly by Coronado 36-16 to finish the regular season.
The Bulldogs were down two touchdowns early on big plays from Coronado; the first a 65 yard run from Riley and the second a 47 yard pass play from Proctor.
Bulldog quarterback Urias then scored from 24 yards out. Dee Bowler followed up with a 2 point run and a Coronado 14-8 led after the first quarter.
Virgin Valley had 182 yards total rushing on the night. Urias led the team with 67. In the air Urias was 6-18 for 60 yards. Coronado was 8-9 on 82 yards passing and a touchdown.
Rushing the ball Coronado had 256 yards led by Johnson’s 155 yards on 20 carries. Coronado had two more touchdowns in the 2nd quarter and one more in the 3rd before allowing the Bulldogs final touchdown by Urias a six yarder in the 3rd for the final score of 36-16.
The Bulldogs return to Jeff Keel Stadium this Saturday at 1 p.m. for the first round showdown in the state playoffs. The Pirates shut out the Dawgs 18-0 a month ago.
So here’s how the playoffs are set up. The North’s #1 seed is Truckee and they’re hosting the North’s #6 Fernley. Lowry is the North’s #2 and will host #5 Spring Creek. Elko is #3 and will host #4 Fallon.
In the south, Moapa Valley is the #1 seed. The Pirates will host Virgin Valley the South’s #2. The winners will be re-seeded with the North’s 2nd seed heading south and the North’s #1 hosting the North’s #3 seed. The winners advance to the state championship game in Reno.
