Last month at the 7th annual Southern Nevada Interagency Volunteer Recognition Breakfast, Moapa resident Bruce Lund was the featured guest and recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award.
This program is a cooperative effort among the BLM, National Park Service, US Fish & Wildlife Service and the US Forest Service. In this area the volunteer work is done in Warm Springs (Moapa), Pahranagat (Alamo) and the Desert National Wildlife Refuge (Las Vegas). Lund, with 12 other volunteers he organized, spent the summer walking through the aforementioned refuges netting, photographing and cataloging the Dragonflies and Damsel Flies found in this area.
Bruce stated that about 75% of wildlife is actually insects. The many benefits they provide as pollination and removing debris are not documented well and that is his mission.
Lund also serves as the secretary of the Friends of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex (a volunteer group). He leads guided walks and assembles interpretive exhibits.
In addition to his active volunteerism, Lund also sings with the Zephyr Consort and the Valley Voices and in local church congregations. He is also a talented photographer.
