MVHS Cross Country runners pictured l to r Kenna McMurray, Dejeneara Carter, and Skyler Whipple ran in the State Championship meet in Reno last weekend, despite cold weather conditions.

Members of the Moapa Valley High School cross country team experienced joy, pain, and a lot of fun this weekend as they competed at the State Championship meet in Reno, Nevada. Moapa had qualified three runners for the State meet; Dejaneara Carter, Kenna McMurray and Skyler Whipple.

The three Pirates and their coaches left early Friday morning to travel with the other Southern schools to the State meet. The athletes from the southern teams were shocked at how cold the temperatures were and how much difference the higher elevation made to their running.

Moapa ran two girls in twenty five degree temperatures and lightly snowing weather, a big difference from the warmer temperatures they were accustomed to. Mary Jo Wright a senior from Elko took first place in the race with a time of 19:17. Boulder City cross country powerhouse Jessica Tobler ran the race with a time of 21:10 and came in 27th place.

For the Pirates, DJ Carter crossed the finish line first with a time of 26:32. Kenna McMurray following her at 27:22, a personal record for this season.

“It was cold, I couldn’t breathe, and my whole body was numb,” said Carter about her experience. “I still pushed it as hard as I could and so did Kenna and Skyler. Good job to all of us!”

The girl’s team also won the Academic State Championship, meaning their team had the best grade point average in the entire 3A region.

In the boys race, Skyler Whipple ran for the Pirates. Skyler, a freshman, was the only male runner from Moapa to qualify.

Skyler ran the race with a time of 21:12 in the frigid temperatures.

The first place ranking in the Boy’s race went to Nick Hartle, a senior at Centennial High School who ran it in 16:41.

“We were told that it is a rebuilding year,” said Boys Coach Gary Watkins. “What we, as coaches, found is student athletes that are asked to do the ‘impossible’, and yet when they cross the finish line their only question is “Did I ‘PR’”? I love these kids because they not only rose to our expectations of them, but they put their hearts on the line every single practice and race all season long.”
