Student council members, Morgan Aikele and Evan Hernandez, display projects from Home Ec students during the Mack Lyon Student Showcase Thursday night.
Mack Lyon Middle School invited students and their parents to a special Student Showcase on Thursday evening, November 17.
Students had the opportunity to show what they’ve been doing in school for the community in a free-for-all format. This allowed parents and community members to tour the school and get a taste of what school life is like for the middle-schoolers of Moapa Valley.
The evening started off with a performance by the Jazz Band in the gym, as well as other performances throughout the night by the Orchestra, Lyon Locomotion Dance Team, and Cheer Squad.
Showcase organizer and 7th grade History teacher, Jared Meyer, has been looking forward to the chance for students to show their work.
“So often, parents come to see their child play in the band, or the orchestra, or they come to games,” Meyer stated. “But they rarely get to experience everything. The Showcase allows them to get a taste of middle school life, and it allows the students to show off their hard work.”
In addition to the performances, students themselves had the opportunity to visit different areas of the school with a passport to be stamped at each station. The completed passports were put into a drawing for cash on Friday morning.
National Junior Honor Society President Tatyanna Garcia was shadowing Meyer throughout the night, learning the roles of leadership, and making announcements.
“It’s been really great seeing what everyone is doing,” Garcia said. “I’m really proud of my friends and I love seeing everything on display out there.”
There were also some presentations specifically for parents. Lyon teacher, Crystal Blackwell made a presentation on organization skills, which included helpful hints on how to get the unorganized student motivated. School Counselor Kim Delgadillo presented a session on Bully Prevention, which showcased how the students themselves are becoming a part of the solution.
Throughout the halls, different school projects were on display, including English essays, Art, Computers and Science. In addition to the displays, a Book Fair was being held in the library.

It was a wonderful evening. Often parents hear when their child is in trouble, or not getting their work done. I loved representing my artists’ work. It was fun.
