Seventh Annual ‘Golf Fore Kids’ To Be Held In Mesquite

The 2010 Golf Fore Kids tournament generated 116 bicycles for needy children in 2010. The 2011 event set for Dec. 8 has expanded to include four courses and an even bigger field.

The seventh annual Golf Fore Kids four-player scramble scheduled for Dec. 8 is expected to be bigger than ever.

Slated for play at four courses: Falcon Ridge, Conestoga, The Palms and the Oasis Canyons golf courses; the tournament to benefit underprivileged children and their families has expanded in its seventh year.

Originally started by Falcon Ridge General Manager Brian Wursten and his brother, Rob; along with Mesquite businessman Geno Withelder, the tournament raised about $50,000 in cash and gifts in the 2010 event.

The courses and the food are donated along with the help and the time.

“The beauty of this tournament is that everything is donated,” said Withelder, a local city councilman. “There are absolutely no expenses incurred with the event so everything goes back to the charity and especially the kids.”

Withelder said the need for underprivileged families has increased dramatically in the past two years. While the unemployment rate has stabilized, the problem of needy families has risen appreciably, he said.

Last year’s event drew 374 participants and tournament officials expect the 2011 event to top that figure by at least 50 added entries.

The continued success of the Golf 4 Kids tournament not only provides help for the needy but also illustrates the city’s genuine concern to help others.

“The biggest help we have received over the years is Mesquite Gaming,” added Withelder. “Their people have provided everything from the silverware to the golf course and the luncheon facility not to mention the sound system. It goes on and on.”

The first-ever contributor for the Mesquite event was Legacy Construction, which formerly owned Falcon Ridge Golf Course. Legacy is still involved providing some of the tee prizes and gifts.
