As the Moapa Valley High School Boys Basketball season kicked off last week one thing was clear, there is still a long way to go, to build and to get better.

In the first game of the season at Sunrise Mountain in Las Vegas on Thursday, the Pirates were beaten by a team who had the advantage in both height and speed. The Sunrise Mountain team fully exploited both of those advantages and raced out to a 26-11 first quarter lead. And they never looked back.

Ben Stanley led the Pirates in scoring with 16 points. Jacob Rebman had 10 points and the Pirates were down 46-22 at the half.

The Miners continued their domination with 18 more in the 3rd quarter and finished the game with 17 more for an 81-47 victory.

Moapa is missing their point guard Dakota Watters who is still suffering with an injury from the football season.

The Pirates were out-rebounded 2 to 1 with the Miners collecting 34 to the Pirate’s 17 on the night. The Pirates were 10 for 21 from the free throw line while the Miners were 6-15.

Then, last Friday night the Pine View Panthers came to town from St. George, looking to beat the Pirates and continue with the sibling rivalry between head coaches. And it was all Pine View.

Pine View started off the game with a three pointer and never looked back in the 63-36 Panther win.

Pine View jumped out to an 18-5 lead after the first quarter using a 2-2-1 press to finish the quarter on an eight point run.

The Panthers started the second quarter with a three-pointer and extended the lead to 18 when Wilsted got three attempts to tip the ball in the hoop.

Once again, height played a huge factor in the game as the Panthers out-rebounded the Pirates 12-23.

Pine View lead 33- 14 at the half. In the 3rd quarter the Pirates outscored the Panthers 16-14 a closed the lead to 17.

Pine View hit another three to start the third quarter. The Pirate press bothered the Panthers for a little while causing a run with six points by the Pirates midway in the third.

When the 4th quarter started the game got a little more physical as 18 free throws were shot total by both teams. Pine View closed out the win by scoring 16 points to the Pirates 6 for the final score 63-36.

Wilsted led all scorers with 12 points. The Pirates had Landon Willard as their high scorer at 8.

From the line, Pine View was 11-23 while the Pirates were 10-25.
