James Younghans

James “Jim” Whitney Younghans, 76, of Boulder City, NV passed away at his home on Saturday, December 3, 2011 after a brave 15-year battle with prostate cancer. Jim was born in his parents’ home in Sparks, Nevada to Pete and Dorothy Younghans and was a Nevada resident his entire life.

Jim was the second of four brothers raised in Sparks, graduating from Sparks High School, receiving an Electrical Engineering degree from UNLV and earning his Professional Engineer certificate.

He married Nancy Lois Meeker on July 17, 1960 in Sacramento, CA and had two daughters, Linda and Diane. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and worked for various governmental agencies including the Department of Defense, FAA, Bureau of Mines and EPA after his military service. His work allowed him to travel with his family in their camper throughout the western United States, eventually settling down in Tonopah, NV then Henderson, NV.

He retired to Stewart Point near Overton where he fished Lake Mead regularly, rode his motorcycle and got his private pilots license. Jim and Nancy recently moved to Boulder City. He loved to invent, build and fix all sorts of things. He also enjoyed a lifetime of hunting, fishing, skin and SCUBA diving. He loved to travel and was thrilled to have visited every continent and every ocean.

He is preceded in death by his father, Pete Younghans, mother, Dorothy Whitney Younghans, and brothers, Charles and Robert Younghans. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy Meeker Younghans, daughters Linda (Dan) Kozik and Diane (Craig) Shanklin, granddaughter Randi (Kurt) Krueger, grandson Daniel Kozik, brother George (LaRene) Younghans, nieces Roberta Younghans Gilmartin and JulieAnne Younghans O’Connor and many friends and loved ones.

In lieu of a funeral service, there will be a celebration of Jim’s life in the Spring and his ashes will be placed in Santa Cruz, CA by his family. Condolences can be sent to Nancy at nannjim@gmail.com.
