Walter T. “Tommy” Stone
Services for Walter T. “Tommy” Stone, 89, of Emmett, Idaho, who died Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at a Boise hospital, were held Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett. Burial followed at the Emmett Cemetery.
Tommy was born on Aug. 21, 1922, at Dawson Springs, Ky., to Walter and Madora Green Stone. He moved with his family to Oklahoma City where he was reared and educated.
Tommy joined the United States Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945. He settled in California and was employed by the State of California Dept. of Corrections.
He married Helen “Maggie” McGuire on Oct. 22, 1952, at Barksdale, Texas. Tommy retired as Warden of Soledad State Prison on Aug. 21, 1977. They had a concessions business on Lake Mead, which they operated for several years. They lived at Overton, Nev., until they moved to Emmett in March of 1992.
Tommy was a pilot and enjoyed flying as well as golf, woodworking, reloading and shooting trap, boating, fishing and hunting.
He was the Tommy in Tommy Do Gooders and he helped many families through the years. He was a member of Emmett New Life Christian Center.
He is survived by his wife, Helen “Maggie” Stone of Emmett and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister and his parents.
