It was a full schedule for the Pirates last week. They were first sleighted to entertain Chaparral who thrashed the Pirates last season. Then they were to go up against a Silverado team that was returning all five of its starters from last season. Then they were to play three games including a rematch from last year’s state championship game. Finally they were to finish it up with a double header on Saturday.

How did they do? Well they aren’t winless anymore.

Tuesday, December 6 saw a Big Chaparral team come to town. The Pirates gave the cowboy’s a real battle.

Moapa started off the game taking a 10-5 lead to finish the 1st quarter; a good start for the much smaller Pirate team.

But Chaparral came out on fire in the second quarter scoring 20 to the Pirates 13 and held on to a two point lead at the half.

Sean McConnell (Jr., 5’10”) led the Pirates in scoring for the night with 14. But, as has been the case this season, free throws cost the Pirates a chance to win the game as they converted only 11-23; just less than 50%.

Kamron Alexander paced the Cowboy’s as they had a steady inside and outside performance. Shane Terrill (Sr., 6’0”) scored 13.

The Pirates were out rebounded 15-20 and lost a game that was much closer than the score indicated: 57-48 Chaparral.

On Thursday night the Pirates played the Silverado Skyhawks. A basketball powerhouse this year, Silverado trounced Virgin Valley 74-24 the week before.

Silverado’s Reuben Jackson virtually gave a clinic in how to run an offence from the point guard position leading the Skyhawks to a 78-44 beating of the Pirates.

Jackson showed remarkable leadership as he passed when it needed to be passed and drove the lane for layups when the opening arrived. He had 15 points.

Jackson knew where his players were and directed them in their offense throughout the game.

It was David Ware who dismantled the Pirate defense as he hit jumpers from everywhere on the floor. Ware led all scorers with 26 points.

MVHS Center Jackson Mortenson (Jr., 6’2”) played his best game scoring 10 points and battling inside, grabbing rebounds to slow Silverado’s inside game.

Moapa played the best game thus far of their season that night but just couldn’t hang with the much better Skyhawks. Sean McConnell led the Pirates in scoring with 13. The Pirates were out rebounded 33-18 and shot 5-6 from the line.

In the first round of the Bulldog invitational Moapa played the team they beat in the state finals last year: the Lowry Buckaroos, who had come to Mesquite to face their 3A southern counterparts.

This time it was Lowry who got a little revenge and beat the Pirates 63-54. Lowry took a 12-10 led after the first quarter. But Moapa came back and outscored the Bucks 20-10 in the 2nd quarter for an 8 point 30-22 half time led.

Then Lowry woke up to start the 3rd quarter and pounded down 24 points in the third. They were led by Studebaker’s 19 for the game and Watterson’s 16. The Pirates trailed by six points after the third.

Moapa kept the game close before Lowry pulled away for the nine point win.

Saturday the Pirates played Enterprise and were beaten 42-40 in a heart breaker. To put it plainly the Pirate offense had a terrible time getting shots to go down.

Enterprise wasn’t much better, But they did enough to pull out the game and send the Pirates into the seventh place game against White Pine.

In that game the Pirates pounded the Bobcats 71-34. Shane Terrill found his range and led Moapa with 19 points. The Pirates dominated the helpless bobcats with 29 rebounds to the Bobcats 11. Moapa shot 7-19 from the line.
