Christmas was a made little brighter for some Moapa Valley families when Santa, with help from the 7th Annual Golf Fore Kids program in Mesquite, delivered several thousand dollars worth of toys to Ute V. Perkins Elementary just five days before Christmas.

The toys were made available to parents of needy Moapa Valley kids last Wednesday. The parents visited the school and then loaded up on gifts to put under their trees at home including games, books, crayons, building sets, dolls, sports equipment, bicycles and remote control vehicles among other things.

Since 2005 Falcon Ridge Golf Course has hosted the Golf Fore Kids tournament in which golfers, in lieu of an entry fee to play in the event, donate a toy or bunch of toys worth at least $50, according to Rob Wursten, Falcon Ridge golf pro. Four Mesquite golf courses, including Falcon Ridge, Conestoga, Canyons and Palms, donated their facilities for the event.

“The estimated value of all the toys and cash donations for 2011 was $40,000,” according to Mindee West, Falcon Ridge spokesperson. “The toys are first used to fill the needs of the local (Mesquite) Salvation Army Angel Tree program which this year provided Christmas for 600 children.”

The remaining toys were distributed between Littlefield/Beaver Dam elementary and parents from Perkins Elementary in Moapa and Grant Bowler Elementary in Logandale.

Wursten, with help from driver Clark Mitchell, delivered piles of the donated toys to Perkins.

“Because of a wonderful raffle response, $3,500 was donated to the Shop with a Cop program,” West said. “The Golf Fore Kids tournament accounts for approximately half its year budget.”

Wursten said this year’s tournament had some 440 players who enjoyed an all-day event that included lunch, prizes and a raffle.

“It just gets bigger and bigger every year,” he said.

“The spirit of the tournament has been contagious and continues to expand,” West agreed.

She gave a special thanks to all the golf courses and the Casablanca Hotel Casino that donated its tent and personnel.

Thanks also went to the local police and fire departments, the high school Interact Club and the countless volunteers who gave of their time and energy and to the businesses that generously sponsored holes during the tournament.

“A special thanks to the golfers who participate year after year and make this event possible,” West said. “Christmas was a little brighter this year at hundreds of homes.”
