The Pirates had a hectic wrestling schedule last week as they competed in four duals during the week and then traveled to Enterprise, Utah to compete in a two day tournament over the weekend.

The first duals of the week were at Virgin Valley against the Boulder City Eagles and the Bulldogs of Virgin Valley on January 24. This was the second dual against the Eagles and the first against the Bulldogs.

The beginning dual of the evening was between the Eagles and the Pirates. The last time they met, the Pirates edged out Boulder by four points and now the Eagles were out for revenge.

Boulder City had no problem defeating Moapa because of forfeits due to injuries and wrestlers who had quit. Final score was Boulder City 54 and Moapa Valley 19.

Scoring for the Pirates were: Kaleb Bodily at 126 pounds decision of 7 – 4; Jake Repp at 132 pounds with a decision of 9 – 8; Nathan Sprague at 138 pounds won by a major decision of 18 – 6; Justin Boren at 160 pounds won by a decision of 10 – 7; Parker Chappell at 182 pounds won by a pin.

The Pirates next dual was against Virgin Valley. This was the first time that Virgin and Moapa have met this year at a division dual and it turned out to be a close one. Virgin is tough this year in the lower weights but has a lot of holes in the upper weight classes. The entire match came down to the end when Moapa trailed Virgin by 11 points with two bouts left.

Tim Hoffman of Moapa was the Hero when he pinned his opponent at 170 pounds giving Moapa six points. The last match at 182 pounds was a forfeit to Parker Chappell which gave the Pirates another six points and ended the dual with Moapa on top by one point with a score of 40 to 39.

Scoring for the Pirates were: Jake Repp at 132 pounds won by a pin; Jared Repp at 152 pounds won by a major decision of 16 – 2; Justin Boren won by forfeit at 160 pounds; Tim Hoffman at 170 pounds won by a pin; Parker Chappell won by forfeit at 182 pounds; Colton Millington won by forfeit at 195 pounds and Tyson Mortensen won by forfeit at 220 pounds.

The Pirates traveled to Green Valley High School and dualed Green Valley and Basic High Schools on January 25. Green Valley dominated the Pirates and won by a score of 69-6. The only six points for Moapa came when the 182 pound wrestler wasn’t allowed to wrestle Parker Chappell giving the Pirates six points by forfeit.

Moapa then faced Basic High School and won by a score of 45 to 36. Scoring for the Pirates were: Zac Baldwin at 113 pounds win by a forfeit; Kaleb Bodily at 126 pounds decision of 3 – 2; Jake Repp at 132 pounds won by a forfeit; Jared Repp at 152 pounds won by a forfeit; Justin Boren won by a pin at 160 pounds; Tim Hoffman won by forfeit at 170 pounds; Parker Chappell won by a forfeit at 182 pounds and Colton Millington won by a pin at 195 pounds.

Over the weekend, the Pirates competed in the Enterprise Invitational. There were 15 teams who participated in the JV and Varsity tournament.

The wrestlers were divided into pods within each weight class. Athletes wrestled each person in their pod over the course of two days. Depending on the number of wrestlers in each weight class the top two wrestlers in each pod wrestled the top two from other pods to determine a true champion in each weight classification. This format gives all the wrestlers many matches regardless of whether or not they win or lose.

After the two day tournament was finished the Pirates walked away with four medals. In the JV tournament Kaden Griffiths had an excellent tournament and earned a third place finish in the 106 pound class. Justin Boren finished in first place in the 160 pound JV tournament.

The Pirates had two medalists in the Varsity tournament. Nathan Sprague placed fourth in the 138 pound weight class. Parker Chappell went undefeated with six pins and one decision 19-5 in the 182 pound weight class and took first place.

Snow Canyon was the first place team followed by Hurricane and rounding out the top three was South Sevier in third place.

This week the Pirates have their first and only home dual at Moapa High School on Thursday, February 2 against Coronado High School.
