Northern 3A Boys

Elko is really taking control over the northern schools as the final two weeks of the regular season is under way. Last week the Indians finished with their 12th win in a row and have taken over the top spot in the state in the standings.

Their week started in West Wendover where the Indians won a nail biter 52-50 against the Wolverines. West Wendover jumped out to a 22-11 lead after the first quarter. Elko battled back each quarter and won it in the final minute taking the lead with a jumper and finishing with a free throw.

In their game last Saturday they pounded the Spartans of Spring Creek their arch rival 66-47. A 23 to 12 3rd quarter was the difference.

Lowry started the week in Ely against White Pine and beat the Bobcats 70-54. Lowry received another loss when they were beaten by West Wendover of the 2A 65-60. The Buckaroos have lost 2 of their last three games and fall into second place in the league. Lowry is 15-5 on the season.

Sparks hammered Whittle 63-21 in Zephyr Cove then was beaten by Incline at home 51-50. They then hosted Truckee and pounded them 63 -37 to gain a 14-5 record heading into the final two weeks.

South Tahoe is now 10-10 and has won 2 in a row. They beat North Tahoe 68-18 then beat Whittle 62-39.

Fernley who is now sitting at 10-11 destroyed Fallon 68-24 then traveled to Lovelock and lost on a heart breaker 59-58. Fernley is on the road this week as they travel to Yerington then Silver Stage.

Dayton ended their 8 game slide with wins over ROP 72-57 and Fallon 68-66. The ROP win was the first since December 15.

Truckee lost two home games this week the first in a heartbreaker versus Incline 49-47 then they were run over by the Rail Roaders from Sparks 63-37. Truckee had won their four previous games headed into last week.

Spring Creek is 8-10 on the season they beat the Long horns of Battle Mountain 72-50 in Battle Mountain then in the rivalry game against Elko were beated 66-47 in Elko.

Fallon continues to struggle as they were beaten two more times last week. The first against Fernley in a 68-24 massacre then in a heart breaker to Dayton 68-66. The Green Wave this week host Lovelock and ROP before ending the week at Dayton.

Southern 3A Boys

Boulder City prepped for only one game last week and it was against the Bulldogs from Virgin Valley for first place in the league standings.

The Eagles beat the Dawgs in Boulder City 70-57 to claim first place with the win. Virgin Valley continues to trail the Eagles and Pirates. Boulder’s Hafen scored a season high 31 in leading the Eagles to the win.

For Virgin Valley it was sophomore Dee Bowler who had 19 pacing the Bulldogs in the game.

Boulder lead 15-7 after the first quarter then took a 33-19 lead into the Locker room at half time. After three quarters the Eagles increased the lead to 51-34 before finishing off the Dawgs 70-57.

Virgin Valley outscored the Eagles 23-19 in the 4th quarter. Boulder City is 15-8 and 2-0 in league play.

Virgin Valley has now lost 3 in a row with the loss at Boulder last Friday night. Prior to Boulder City the Bulldogs lost to Arbor View in Las Vegas 63-59 in overtime. Virgin Valley took a 22-13 lead after the first quarter only to have Arbor View whittled away at the lead the rest of the night coming back from 8 down at the beginning of the fourth quarter to tie the game then scored 10 points in overtime including Blake Claxton going 4 for 4 from the free throw line to ice the victory. Claxton had 26 points for the game while Dee Bowler scored 23 to lead the Dawgs. Virgin Valley’s losing streak will most likely continue as they play the fourth ranked Clark Chargers to start out this week then travel to Bonanza and Moapa Valley Friday night for a rematch with the Pirates.

Southern 3A Girls

Boulder City now has the best record in the state 3A at 18-4 and sits atop the southern 3A with their win against Virgin Valley last Friday 46-36. Barlow and Daly each scored 10 points for the Eagles with Barlow dominating the boards with 11 rebounds. Barnard had 17 for the Bulldogs.

Boulder City has won 8 straight games. Boulder City is in first place in the league with a 2-0 record.

Virgin Valley started the week by getting beat at home against the Aggies from Arbor View High School 46-40. This game was close throughout the contest as the Aggies lead by 4 at the half 26-22 then by 5 after the third 35-30.

For the Aggies it was Valenzuela who lead in scoring with 13. For Virgin Valley it was Metzger who had 14.

Virgin Valley is in second place in the league right now with a 1-1 record.

Northern 3A Girls

Spring Creek is on fire as they have won 10 straight and counting. When the streak started they were 4-8. Now they are 14-8 and beat Battle Mountain 65-19 last week.

Lowry is 13-3 and beat White pine last week.

Truckee is moving up the ranks with a 9-5 record but most importantly, they are in first in the league at 4-0 with a 52-19 win against Sparks and a 53-36 win against Incline.

Fernley has lost 5 in a row and now has a record of 12-8. They were beaten by Fallon 44-39 then blown out by Lovelock 65-30.

Elko beat West Wendover 66-18.

Fallon is 11-9 and has a 5 game winning streak going. They beat Fernley 44-39 then Dayton 49-38 last week.

Dayton is 9-10 losing to Fallon 49-38.

South Tahoe has won 2 in a row and sits at 7-12 on the season. They beat North Tahoe 42-36 then Whittle 43-14.

Sparks still hasn’t won a game with losses to Incline and Truckee last week.
