OBITUARY: Jerry Matthews

Jerry Williams Matthews passed away Sunday January 22nd in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Valley View Hospital after a long hard battle of complications of the heart. He was born on Feb 9, 1950 in Springfield Mississippi, to Samuel and Opal Matthews. He spent his life in Texas, New Mexico, and the last 12 years in Overton, Nevada.

He was preceeded in death by both his parents, his brother Paul, Leon Gabberta, niece Robin Carey, and Showlow (on January 24th).

Surviving members include Katherine Greer-Matthews of the home, son Christopher Matthews of Texas, daughters TaRai (Bryan) McNeely of Texas, Sharron Matthews and husband Willie of Texas, Step-daughter Vickie Sparman of New Mexico, Jerry’s (brother in, and of the heart) Russ Babb, Children of Nevada, sister Mary Jo Carey of Oregon, Aunt Ann Garrison of Texas, Grandchildren BryAnna and Ryan McNeely, Lacy Ingram and Katelynn Steward all of Texas.

His passions were 1) family, friends and those he met. As he lived each and everyday, Jerry never knew a stranger. 2) Auto body painting and restoration along with competing in auto racing ( in his younger days). 3) Innovative cooking, especially if a grill was involved. 4) Helping others whenever possible, regardless or the hour, day and/or date (including Christmas Day).

Jerry always had a great sense of humor and a smile for everyone. He loved to work hard and play hard. He was a major contributor to the participants of the Annual Overton Car Show. He befriended many, and will be missed by all.
