Fishing The Overton Arm

By Loren Brooks

The weather and the full moon, has made for good fishing at Lake Mead last week.

Don’t always depend on the Las Vegas weather report when deciding if you and your friends are going fishing at Lake Mead. My brother Roy, and cousin Pat arrived Wednesday night for a three day fishing trip. They came all the way from Oregon to catch striped bass in Lake Mead. The forecast was for wind Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Guess what? We had perfect weather and caught 13 fish using lures.

Reports came in from a number of people who caught anywhere from one to forty fish in the last three days of this past week. Alan and Kathy caught 40 fish in 40 minutes, Friday. Stan and Pat caught 32 fish trolling with lures Friday afternoon. Take a look at the nice stringer that ranged from five pounds on down. Larry and Walt caught 13 on lures. Rod, Bob and Alan caught 15 on lures. Don, Roy, and Lee caught 15 on anchovies. Some of the fish were in the five pound bracket.

I have found that if you know the best times to fish, on a full moon, it can be excellent for about two hours.

My brother Roy, left for Arizona on Monday. We cooked 21 filets on cedar boards on the outdoor Bar-B-Q, with the lid down (15 minutes is all it takes) and had some scrumptious striped bass, with no leftovers. We all agree, that fish from Lake Mead are the very best.

Brother Roy, baked a loaf of “No Knead Sourdough” bread to go along with the fish dinner. It was sort of a religious experience – “bread and fish”.

Gary Ikerd and friends have started a petition to get the Overton Beach road open, so we can use the boat ramp to launch our boats. Get your name on the petition if you want this road open. I sure do.

Well, keep your lures and bait in the water, the waters of life.
