Pirate Wrestlers Compete At State

MVHS Wrestler, Parker Chappell slams his Fernley opponent to the mat which advanced him to the final round in the state tournament.

The Moapa Valley Pirates ended the season by participating in the NIAA State Tournament held in the Cox Pavilion last weekend. Sponsored in part by the UFCthe event concluded the 2011/2012 wrestling season for 1A through 4A schools throughout the state of Nevada.

On Friday the different school classifications were separated for the first two rounds of wrestling, eliminating many wrestlers from the competition. On Saturday, all schools wrestled together in front of a packed Cox Pavilion crowd on three mats.

The Pirates took eleven wrestlers to the tournament this year. In the double elimination comtest, a wrestler was done after two losses. Unfortunately, Moapa only had four wrestlers survive the first day of competition.

Kaleb Bodily at 126 pounds went 3 – 2 for the tournament. Bodily wrestled in a pigtail match against Brazell, of Fernley, to enter the final eight man bracket. Bodily pinned Brazell in 26 seconds.

Kaleb then drew the number one seed from Spring Creek on his second match. Bodily lost by a tech fall of 17 – 2 to Tripp of Spring Creek.

Bodily’s last match on Friday night was against Browning of Virgin Valley. Kaleb pinned Browning in 2:42.

Saturday morning Bodily won by a decision of 9 – 6 over Garvin of Boulder City. Kaleb’s last match was against Nathan Heck of Churchill County. Bodily lost by a pin to Heck and took fourth place in the 3A state finals.

Kaleb finished the season with an overall record of 26 wins 23 losses with 15 pins.

Trevor Durham at 160 pounds went 2 – 1 for the tournament. Durham went into the tournament as the number one seed from the south. Trevor pinned Collinson of Truckee in his first match in 3:37 and advanced to wrestle Mays of Spring Creek in the semi-finals. Durham overcame a 7 – 2 deficit by pinning Mays in the third period 4:37.

Durham then faced Jace Billingsley of Lowry. Billingsley a three time defending state champion pinned Durham in the second period at 2:41. Trevor finished the tournament in second place at 160 pounds. Trevor finished the season with an overall record of 26 wins 6 losses with 18 pins.

Parker Chappell at 182 pounds was 3 – 1 during the tournament. Chappell also was the number one seed from the southern division going in to the tournament.

Parker met Stanton from Dayton in the first bout. Chappell pinned Stanton in 28 seconds and advanced to the semi finals where he met the defending 189 pound state champion from Spring Creek, Nick Cdebaca. Chappell was defeated by Cdebaca by a decision of 10 to 3.

Parker went on to pin Gaitan of Fernley in 48 seconds and advanced to the medal rounds where he faced Tyler Curtis of Truckee. Chappell pinned Curtis in 3:52. Parker finished the tournament in third place at 182 pounds. Parker finished the season with an overall record of 64 wins 4 losses with 45 pins.

Colton Millington at 195 pounds went 2 – 2 during the tournament. Millington entered the tournament as the number two seed from the south. He was pinned by Ramirez of Truckee in the first round of competition in 1:37.

Colton then faced his next opponent from Fernley, CJ Kilbride. Millington defeated Kilbride by a pin in 3:36 and advanced in the bracket to Saturday’s competition. Millington went on to pin Roumanos of Spring Creek in 1:25 which advanced him to the medal round.

Colton met Ramirez of Truckee again in the final round and was defeated by a pin in 1:05. Colton finished the tournament in fourth place at 195 pounds. He ended the season with an overall record of 19 wins 27 losses with 15 pins.

Lowry ran away with the team state title for the fourth year in a row. Spring Creek finished in second followed by Boulder City in third.

The state tournament brings the season to an end. Pirate wrestlers who had more wins than losses on the season were: Brayden Evans 16 – 11 with 12 pins; Justin Boren 17 – 14 with 9 pins; Schyler Postma 17 – 16 with 13 pins; Jake Repp 18 – 17 with 11 pins; Jared Repp 23 – 16 with 13 pins; Kaleb Bodily 26 – 23 with 15 pins; Trevor Durham 26 – 6 with 18 pins; Parker Chappell 64 – 4 with 45 pins.
