Fishing On The Overton Arm

By Loren Brooks

Rod, Bob, and Larry, are hooked on lures. And they are catching lots of fish.

Rod and Larry are both captains of boats that come out of Idaho and trade off, one outfitting for the other, each week fishing for Striped Bass. Friday was Larry’s turn to provide the boat, with Bob Nivan as the third party on the boat, serving as the “boatswain”.

These guys will talk to you on channel 5, and don’t mind sharing where the hot spots are for the days catch. They held up a stringer of 15 bass, as they came alongside, for a snap shot of stripers they caught Friday, February 24.

My daughter Carolyn and her husband, Mike caught four on lures that afternoon. But according to Carolyn the best catch of the day, was catching a glimpse of a coyote swimming across the Virgin River, about a half mile north of Fish Island. This little swimmer looked like a pig at first glance. You could just see the ears wiggling like a pig, but the closer we got to the critter, we realized it was a coyote. We followed it to the east bank of the river and watched it shake the water from it’s coat as it headed into the brush.

Be sure to take time to look for the wild burros which can be seen almost every day on the eastern shore near marker 18. We counted five burros last week and four on this occasion.

Another incident Friday involved a stranded bass boat, which had power failure. Larry offered assistance in towing the boat back to Echo, if necessary. The California Boys were involved in a Bass Tournament at Callville Bay. which is at least 28 miles south.

As it turned out, the Park Service allowed the men to use the Overton Beach boat ramp to recover the boat. Wouldn’t that be nice if all of us could use the Overton boat ramp to escape the cost of driving to and from Echo. Again it is our plea to get that road open for some great spring fishing in the Overton Arm of Lake Mead. That will save us 40 miles on the highway, and 20 miles on the water (round trips).

Well, we hope you get a chance to catch some striped bass, or join in a fish fry with friends who have been on the water. I’ll be cooking striped bass this weekend, over the Bar-B-Q on cedar boards, with a dozen loafs of sourdough bread for a neighborhood pot-luck fish fry.
