Where are your favorite places to go in the Gold Butte region? That was one of the many questions that BLM officials were asking at a series of workshop meetings held last week to get public input for a Gold Butte Recreational Analysis, a study of non-motorized recreation which is expected to be completed later this year.
The Annual Spring Bazaar at the Senior Center was held on Saturday, March 24. Getting an early start at 8:00 a.m. vendors set up tables and displays.
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) is accepting public comments between now and May 17 in regards to recent fare adjustments and other proposed changes. A public hearing on the proposed fare structure changes will be held on Tuesday April 10 from 12:00 noon – 2:00pm at the City Hall in Mesquite City. The hearing will be held in the City Council Chamber.
A group of local women got together for an all-nighter on Friday night for the 11th Bi-Annual Marathon of Scrapbooking. Organized by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 75, the night’s event offered a 28-hour scrapbooking extravaganza that was also a fundraising opportunity for the Auxiliary. Money spent for admission and raffles went into a general fund that serves veterans.
Local opponents of a new Gold Butte National Conservation Area (NCA) with wilderness are absolutely right in their arguments against the proposal. An NCA designation at Gold Butte is not needed, nor is it wanted by the majority of people who most enjoy this rugged landscape.
No one asked me but… There has been a major controversy brewing over high school athletics in Nevada. The concern is over the fact that a private school in Las Vegas has been dominating the major sports in the large school division of the Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association (NIAA).
I read with interest an article published by the Moapa Valley Progress (Heck Meets With Stakeholders Over Resolution To Gold Butte Quandary: Progress, March 21, 2012) describing a recent meeting where proposed legislation concerning Gold Butte was debated. This meeting, hosted by Congressman Joe Heck, was held to solicit input from local stakeholders about future management of this special area.

Arnold Segmiller, age 75, passed away Monday, March 20, 2012 at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born July 12, 1936 in Las Vegas to Ben and Daisy Sackett Segmiller.
