Mesquite Theatre To Undergo Ownership Change This Week

The Stadium 6 theatre in Mesquite is changing ownership hands this weekend from Westates Theatres to Larry H. Miller Megaplex Theatres, a company based in Salt Lake City.

Though next week’s holiday movie-goers may not even notice it, there will be some big changes going on at the Mesquite Stadium 6 movie theatres on Mesquite Blvd.

During the spring the theatre, which has been owned by Westates Theatres since it was built in 2007, was part of a large acquisition by Megaplex Theatres, a large company based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

As part of an ongoing expansion initiative, Megaplex acquired eleven Westates Theatre facilities including five in the St. George area, two in Cedar City, three in Logan, Utah, and the one Mesquite location. Though the acquisition took place in April, the official change over in operations of the theatre is expected to take place this weekend.

In a telephone interview with the Progress, Megaplex spokesman Jeff Whipple said that his company hopes that the changeover won’t even be clearly visible to the local customers.

“Initially, we want this to be as seamless a transition as possible,” Whipple said. “Especially since it is happening during the summer which is a busy time for theatres, and even more because it is right before the July 4th holiday which is a huge movie weekend.”

Whipple said that the Megaplex management team has been in Mesquite working on getting things ready for the transition. The hope is that any differences in operations coming about from the acquisition will be minimal.

“The staff might be wearing a different golf shirt as their uniform,” Whipple said. “But the day to day operations will be largely the same.”

Of the course, over the next few months, the new owner definitely has plans for important improvements, Whipple said. Early on there will be attention to some of the minor details like repairs to seats and carpets.

More importantly, there are upgrades being planned to the theatre’s technology. Currently the Mesquite location is running with one screen in full digital and the rest using film, Whipple said.

“Our plan is to transition the other five auditoriums to 100% digital sooner than later,” Whipple said. “We are hoping that will take place by the end of the year if all goes well.”

Founded by Utah businessman Larry H. Miller, Megaplex Theatres are among the top grossing in the nation and have been listed among the most popular theatres in Utah. This expansion project brings Megaplex Theatres to more than 150 screens across 17 current or announced locations.

“That will put us high in the ranks as far as Hollywood is concerned,” Whipple said. “And that is good when it comes to negotiating and getting access to films. We look forward to providing guests in these communities the best experience possible.”
