National Public Lands Day will be held on this Saturday, September 29. A number of volunteer work projects will be taking place at the Whitney Pockets Area in the Gold Butte Complex. The projects will go on throughout the day from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Projects will include installing and upgrading kiosks, improving campsites, installing carsonite signs, picking up trash and more.
Partners In Conservation (PIC) administrator Elise McAllister said that a group of rural residents and members of ATV groups plan to do minor road maintenance and trail monitoring throughout the day.
“We’ll all gather around maps at around 8:00 and people can pick the roads they want to monitor,” McAllister said.
She advised that participants bring shovels, rakes, gloves and whatefver tools they may need to do light road repairs.
“With the recent rains the BLM anticipates that many of the side roads have little washouts,” McAllister said. “Doing some minor work would make the roads more passable for the average person.”
She said that volunteers would not be expected to do serious road repair or fix large washouts.
The group is planning to meet back at Whitney Pockets at lunch time
Those interested in volunteering should go to www.getoutdoorsnevada.org/events.htm#092912c to register for the event with the BLM.
McAllister stressed that local residents registering would demonstrate the amount of rural residents that ‘care’ about the area.
“So if you are so inclined and don’t mind, please take the time to register,” she said. “But whether you register or not, please attend!”
