OPEN FORUM: A Three-Part Observation, Part Three The Taxes

By ESTHER RAMOS

Most of my life I’ve paid no income taxes. I’ve never been in anybody’s union, so I’ve always paid Social Security taxes. You know: they take it out of your check if you’re non-union without you having any say-so about it.

For almost all of my life, they took income taxes from me all year as well. But at tax time, I simply filled out the tax return form and every dime of income tax was given back to me. Year after year it was all given back, so in the end, I wound up paying no taxes. The only money I lost was any interest I would have made if my dollars had been in my own bank account instead of IRS coffers.

I made above poverty level for the first time in this life, when I drove truck my first complete year.

There are huge numbers of us not making above poverty level who do not end up owing income taxes. We get refunds. And since most of our people don’t earn more than $250,000 annually, most of us won’t be directly stolen from (oops…I mean taxed) any worse than we are now.

However, the people we work for will get a large tax increase, so you won’t be getting your raise this year.

If you do happen to notice an hourly increase, please notice also the increase in what’s taken out, so you actually receive less.
