Digging Up Some Summer Fun At Overton Library

As the school year draws to a close, students will be left with some time on their hands. They can fill some of that time with the numerous activities available at the Moapa Valley Library. Magicians, singers, and storytellers are just a few examples of the great entertainment in store this summer at the library.

Dig into Reading is the theme for Moapa Valley Library’s 2013 Summer Reading Program. Kids can be involved in “Digging up Rocks,” a storytime and activity involving geology, jewels, and gold mining. They can also plant garden vegetables, “dig up” dinosaurs, and even be involved with exploding volcano science projects!

There are also several special guest appearances planned. Magician Tony Daniels will be coming again, as well as singer Eric Herman, and DJ Tony.

The first activity, the Teddy Bear Sleepover, will be held on Friday, May 31 at 4 pm. Children can bring one stuffed animal to the library to listen to stories. Then leave that stuffed animal at the library for a “sleepover.” The stuffed animals can be picked up the next morning at an Ice Cream Kick-off party.

Another activity is Club Read, the reading component of the summer program. Children 0-18 who want to be involved in the program can register starting June 1. All the students need to do in order to complete the program is read twenty books between June 1 and August 3. Children can register to be included in a pool for weekly drawings. Students can earn big prizes such as tickets to a 51’s baseball game, Target gift cards, Barnes and Noble gift cards, and more.

Every time kids read a book or attend a program they earn a coupon that can be redeemed at the library for prizes.

All the programs and activities are free and open to anyone who is interested in having a fun summer. Most activities are held on Fridays at 11:15 am. Keep an eye on the Progress Community Calendar or pick up a copy of the summer schedule at the library to make sure you don’t miss any!

The library will also continue to have its Tiny Tot story time every Friday at 10:15 and Preschool story time on Wednesdays at 11:15.

The Art Guild will also teach art classes for students ages 12 and up at the library.

“Our objective is to bring people to the library and keep kids reading during the summer,” says librarian April Heath. “Students who read throughout the summer can maintain their reading level and hold on to all the progress they have made throughout the school year.”
