The difficult back to school experience was made just a bit easier for a group of troubled kids in Las Vegas, thanks to the efforts of a local Boy Scout and the help of the Moapa Valley community.

During this past summer, Logandale Boy Scout Brandon Jackson has been hard at work on his Eagle Scout project. Of all the project ideas he or his leaders could think of, he decided to collect school supplies for Clark County foster children in order to raise community awareness in Moapa Valley about these children and their needs.

“I wanted to do something different for my Eagle Scout Project,” Jackson said. “I wanted to do something at a more personal level by helping individuals. My dad inspired me to do a project like this because his Eagle Project was for a group of special needs kids in his community.”

Brandon said that his father, Jamie Jackson, had introduced him to a non-profit organization in Las Vegas called Peggy’s Attic. This organization, with a facility located on the Child Haven campus in Las Vegas, is dedicated to serving the needs of foster children in the county, Brandon said.

“I visited the facility at one point and I noticed that they had almost no school supplies for this upcoming school year,” Brandon said.

So Brandon went to work in his community to help the kids in another. Between July 7 and August 14, Brandon mobilized about 25 adults and youth volunteers in Moapa Valley to gather school supply donations. Together they communicated information about the project, contacting local businesses and posting information in public spaces and stores.

And the donations began flowing in. With the generous support of the Moapa Valley community, and with a couple of cash contributors, Brandon was able to get 100 backpacks, more than 100 notebooks, packages of glue sticks, colored pencils, crayons, scissors, rulers erasers, pencil boxes and folders.

“All of the donations came from the Moapa Valley, Brandon said. “To be honest it was kind of surprising how much we were able to collect.”

On August 14, Brandon loaded all the stuff up and delivered it to Peggy’s Attic.

Peggy’s Attic manager, Audrey Rosenstein, said that she was tremendously grateful for hte support of the Moapa Valley community, Brandon said.

Brandon also expressed gratitude for all of the help he received.

“I would personally just like to thank everyone for making my project a success and for helping to improve the lives of these foster children,” he said.
