No One Asked Me But… (August 28, 2013)

By DR. LARRY MOSES

No one asked me but…The Middle East is the crazy uncle of the world. You lock him in the attic where he can only harm himself. You don’t spend a whole lot of money reforming him because it is impossible. You isolate him from the rest of the family.

It is time the United States government understands this and stops intervening every time some group rebels against its local government. Our attempts at political reform in the Middle East are like a family trying to reform the member who is addicted to drugs but has no desire to change.

The U.S. had determined that Egypt, as well as the rest of the Middle East, would have democratically elected governments. That is until the Egyptian people elected a government that was openly hostile to America.

Our State Department was up to their ears in the overthrow of the Mubarak dictatorship and championed the Arab Spring that was to bring democracy to the Middle East. Egypt overthrew the Mubarak dictatorship and elected Mohamed Morsi, a leader of the Islamic radical Muslim Brotherhood, President. The Morsi government, while openly hostile to America, was duly elected by the people of Egypt. Apparently, our State Department failed to explain to the Egyptian people that they should elect a president who was acceptable to America.

What President Morsi did not understand was that the people of Egypt were not the ones he needed to please. Morsi made the mistake of thinking that his predecessor, Mubarak, ran the country. Egypt is controlled by an Egyptian military that has strong ties to the United States. The military receives over a billion U.S. dollars each year. When Morsi became a deterrent to the Egyptian army, the generals overthrew him and took control of the country.

Since President Morsi was properly elected, as attested by ex-President Jimmy Carter and his world-renowned team of international election snoops. this presented a dilemma for the U.S.

Years ago, in reaction to South American political unrest, Congress passed a law stating that if a military coup occurs in a country where a democratically elected government is removed from power, the United States must discontinue foreign aid. However, in this case if the aid is discontinued, the United States will lose its favored status with the Egyptians.

The government that calls wars “overseas contingencies”, terrorist attacks “work place violence”, and illegal aliens “undocumented workers”, resolved this issue by calling the military coup “a military intervention”.

I begin to wonder if there is an Office of Euphemism in the Obama Administration. If not, there should be, and I am willing to apply to be the czar over it.

Is it to the advantage of the United States to continue the aid? Without a doubt. However, it is still a violation of federal law.

No one asked me but…The Obama administration has found a convenient way to operate. When a law is counter to their wishes, they simply ignore the law.

If immigration laws are not to their liking, they merely refuse to enforce them. If Congress refuses to pass The Dream Act, the President decrees it into being. When the States of Colorado and Washington pass drug laws contrary to federal law, but acceptable to the present administration, the Attorney General refuses to enforce the federal law. However, when Texas passed a voter ID law, supported by the Supreme Court, the Attorney General seeks an injunction.

I am still at a loss as to how requiring a photo I.D. to vote suppresses voter rights. Those poor people Mr. Holder is protecting are supposed to have a photo I.D. to collect their welfare benefits.

Maybe if that law was enforced, there would be fewer cases like the lady who collected welfare benefits from nine different states. However, that is a discussion for another day.

If there is a law that would cause the United States to cut off aid to Egypt due to a military coup, the administration merely calls it a “military intervention”. The law does not mention an intervention.

No one asked me but…This being a family paper, I attempt to stay away from sexual issues but the story of the Mayor of San Diego cries out for comment. The seventy-year-old mayor of San Diego has been accused of sexually harassing 13 different women.

The ex-Congressman and now self-confessed harasser of women should be removed from office for lack of judgment if nothing else. Have you seen the women he is accused of harassing? The first thing he should do upon resigning is get an eye test; or maybe, at his age, orthopedic hose is romantic.

No one asked me but… Senator Harry Reid addressed the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce where he expounded on the benefits of large government programs, the value of ObamaCare, his support of expensive green power, immigration reform, and his dislike for the tea party movement.

While this might have been a great speech for the faculty and administration at UNLV, the run-of-the-mill Vegas businessman falls more to the conservative realm of politics. I am sure Harry enjoyed sticking his finger in the eyes of these conservative businessmen.

I can only say to them: You are the ones who elected him. Not only did you not support the Republican candidate in the last presidential election, 200 top Republicans, mostly businessmen, actually came out in support of Harry. Your rationale was you didn’t want to lose Nevada influence in the Senate.

What they failed to understand is Harry has no power. Senator Chuck Schumer and his group run the Senate. The day of the strong Senate Majority Leader are gone and has been since Tom Daschle of South Dakota filled that role. The real power brokers understand the Senate Majority Leader will take a beating and that is why they selected a non-entity from a small state to fill the position. This allows people to take shots at Harry while Schumer’s gang can operate without interference.

Sharon Angle was admittedly a poor candidate. However, she would have been one more Republican vote in the Senate.

So all I can say to the Chamber is: You baked the cake and now you get to eat it.

Thought of the week…Let me tell you something that we Israelis have against Moses. He took us 40 years through the desert in order to bring us to the one spot in the Middle East that has no oil!
