Holiday Shopping At Senior Center Bazaar

By CATHERINE ELLERTON

Moapa Valley Progress

The Overton Senior Center was all a-buzz with eager shoppers at its annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 30.

As I entered my door at home with my arms laden with treasures I had picked up at the Annual Christmas Bazaar at the Overton Senior Center, a joyous mechanical voice began to sing a happy Christmas song. The singing street light I just had to have had begun to perform! What a wonderful find!

I reminisced back to the wonderful time I had just spent with friends, new and old, at the Bazaar.

I had eagerly entered the Overton Senior Center making my first stop at the raffle ticket table to take a chance on the many wonderful prizes donated by local merchants and craftsmen. The Grand Prize was a beautiful Cross Stitch Quilt

It was only natural that I was drawn to a colorful table laden with other quilts, doll blankets and potato bags. There was an intriguing “Piece Quilt” made of remnants from other quilts which was created by Linda Kramer and 90 year young Ada Jones a snowbird from the Teton Valley in Idaho.

There were so many tables laden with handmade items. I met 2 year-old Charlee Urban at Joanne Watson’s table. The table was overflowing with little animals and handmade ornaments and wreaths and candy arrangements. Little Charlee from Pocatello, Idaho, was visiting her Great Grandma in Overton and had brought her parents to check out the M & M Dolls.

Just across the aisle was a table full of beautiful, intriguing porcelain dolls in fancy dresses which had been created by Cindy Mitchell. It was during my return visit to the table when she pulled out the singing lamp post. I was hooked.

On my way to the Senior Center’s food table, I stopped by Fred Koopman’s craft table where we had a bit of fun with a wooden digital calculator he had designed. That’s when I spotted the apple butter.

I stopped at the Coffee Table to pick up some juice and a donut and took a moment to talk with Walter and Ruth Plante: snowbirds from Alberta, Canada.

This annual fundraiser is held to help support the many programs the Center offers to local seniors, according to Senior Center Director Christine Trombley. Included is the Sr. Nutrition Program which is the noon lunch open to folks 60 years plus for a $3.00 suggested donation. Their guests, if under 60 years of age, pay only $4.50 for a very nutritional meal.
