Mud Bog Racing Will Be Back For Mesquite Off-Road Weekend

Mudbog racing is returning to the region on February 23 for the Mesquite Off-Road Weekend.

For those who loved the Mud Bog Racing event that took place near the Logandale Ballfields last September, there’s another exciting event coming up at the end of next month. As part of the Mesquite Off-Road Weekend, a whole day of Mud Bog racing will take place on Sunday, February 23 at the Eureka Resort in Mesquite. And it is all being organized by Overton resident Larry Skaggs, the author of last September’s mudbog fun.

Skaggs said that the organizers of the big event in Mesquite approached him after the September races in Logandale to bring a similar event to the Mesquite Off-Road Weekend.

“They came to me after they saw the success we had here as far as all the spectators and racers that came that day,” Skaggs said. “It was an overall good, fun experience for families and made some money for a good cause. They saw that and asked me to consider coming up and doing the same thing there.”

Once again, Skaggs hopes to draw some of the big-league bog racers from all over the west to this event. The Eureka has started it out with a $5,000 purse of bonus money to be divided out to the top placers in each of the classes. In addition, all entry fees are returned back to drivers as prize money, Skaggs said. Skaggs expects racers to come from Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona and Nevada for this big event.

In addition to the professional classes, the event will also offer superstock and street classes for the locals to enter their own trucks in the fun. There will also be classes for both 2WD and 4WD ATVs; and special PeeWee and Powderpuff classes as well.

“People shouldn’t be scared to enter,” Skaggs said. “It’s not always the best truck that wins the race. There are a lot of variables in there and anything is possible.”

Skaggs has been involved in mud racing for the past four years now with some significant success. He races a 1986 Ford F-250 with a 460 engine and a C6 transmission.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Skaggs said. “Every year I do something a little different. You make little changes and modifications to the truck as you go along and little by little it becomes more professional. The best thing is that you don’t have to keep it clean all the time like a showcar.”

Skaggs said that it is easy to join in the fun. Complete 2014 official rule books are available here in town at Logandale Tire and Auto, Law Power Sports and Overton NAPA.

Skaggs is hoping that local mud-racing enthusiasts will feel free to join in the fun on February 23. Registration for racers will take place on Saturday, February 22 from 4-6 pm and again on Sunday, Feb. 23 from 8-10 am. A mandatory drivers meeting will take place at 11:00 a.m. and then the races start at noon.

Spectators are welcome. Admission for adults is $10, ages 4-12 is $8; with 3 and under free.
