Fair Fine Arts Exhibit Looking For ‘American Made’

The theme for this year’s Fine Arts Exhibit at the Clark County Fair is “American-made”. Fair Fine Arts Director Robin Maughan says that she hopes this theme will help involve everyone in the county and bring everyone together.

“We are all townspeople,” Maughan said. “Valley people, county people, state people. We are all good American people. And everyone is so talented. We want this exhibit to showcase all of those hidden talents.”

Clark County is full of underappreciated artists, Maughan said. But very few people actually submit their work to be showcased, and even fewer consider their work as “art”. Many people work on their own personal crafting or art projects but don’t consider showing them off at places like the Fair. Maughan hopes that the Fine Arts exhibit will be recognized as a place to feature everything ranging from photography to pickled peppers.

Home Arts categories include photography, paintings, sculptures, sewing, quilting, embroidery, cross-stitch, woodworking, metalworking, scrapbooking, non-perishable foods (jams, jellies, pickled vegetables, etc.), perishable food items (cookies, cakes, breads, etc.), and science projects.

Last year, Kimberly Scott’s cross-stitch rendition of “Starry Night” by Van Gogh won a Best of Show Champion award.

A Best of Class award went to a Paper Mache sculpture on Nevada Mining made by Randi Kerlinger of North Las Vegas.

Amelia Wegnall of Las Vegas won the Best of Class award in the canning section for her “Jammin’ Strawberry,” and Annetta Romero of Overton took Best of Class in the cooking section for an almond tart.

The Best of Class winning science project was conducted by Bowler Elementary student Abbie Evans. She asked the question, “What Beverage Stains a Tooth the Most?”

Maughan said that she would like to see more people enter their scrapbooks into the exhibit.

“There are so many talented people who have created beautiful scrapbooks,” she said. “Hardly anyone gets to see them. I wish more people would realize how incredible their own artwork really is.”

Home Arts entries are to be submitted on Saturday, April 5 and Monday, April 7 at the Fair Office.
