LETTER: Not About The Tortoise

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management was set to spend a million dollars to eliminate one man from the land his family has ranched since 1878. The BLM restricted the American public’s prying eyes from the entire Gold Butte area while they went about their dirty work.

They say this all is about saving the Tortoise! What a lie! Nevada has the largest wildlife preserve in America, The Desert Wildlife Refuge located in Clark County, The entire Lake Mead National Recreational Area and the Red Rock Preserve as well as the whole of the Nevada Test site among others.

Cliven Bundy has provided water that assures survival of Nevada Wildlife (including the tortoise) by providing wells, water troughs, water tanks and developed natural springs. His cattle graze high on the bush and what falls away is food for the low browse Desert Tortoise. A old Indian once said “sheep dung is a hay cube for the Tortoise. Take away the sheep and Tortoise will die”. BLM removed the Indian sheep and the Tortoise died.

The BLM is more than willing to extend the Tortoise hoax on the unsuspecting, unwashed American mug-whump who blindy swallows the government line without any forethought whatsoever. They charge the developers $450 per acre to relocate the Desert Tortoise. Those rescued are sent to a BLM Stalag where most are euthanized.

The Tortoise on the Bundy Ranch roam free and have more access to water.

The BLM has a history of murdering citizens who cross them. A few years ago a fellow with no weapon in hand was disapatched by a BLM officer while drinking a beer on the tailgate of his truck. Just weeks ago BLM shot a unarmed veteran walking along a designated highway in Red Rock Canyon.

Where is our totally gutless congressional delegation who should be working to get BLM land placed as trust lands for the State of Nevada. Instead they choose to follow Boulder City’s Prince of Pot and the Center of Biological Diversity efforts to restrict all of our rights to the great outdoors we have enjoyed for so many years.

My best wishes to Cliven and his family.

Blake Monk
