LETTER: Government Did Not Infringe on Bundy

This whole community uproar about the cattle round-up is really kind of ridiculous and misguided. Personally I could care less about where Mr. Bundy’s cattle graze and I’m sure the tortoises don’t care much either, but the thing that puzzles me is all this talk about the government infringing on Mr. Bundy’s rights to his “ancestral homeland,” since those lands are likely over in Europe somewhere.

The lands in question are actually the ancestral homelands of the Paiute Indians. Just because his ancestors squatted on that land and let their cattle graze there 100+ years ago does not make it his ancestral homeland; that’s just ridiculous.

In fact. Mr. Bundy freely admits that he does not own that land, while at the same time claiming that the BLM is somehow violating his property rights. But then, who needs to rely on simple logic when you can get armed vigilantes to come out and have yourself a good, old-fashioned showdown?

This whole thing has gotten so blown out of proportion by both sides; it has become laughable, really. Each new protest or ridiculous claim, such as being shut off from the rest of the United States during the land closures or Mr. Bundy demanding that the Federal agents be physically disarmed and have their guns gathered just adds to the joke.

The simple facts of the matter are that Mr. Bundy does not own that land, he is grazing his cattle for free on public lands and then making a profit off of those cattle, which is illegal and not fair to the ranchers who do pay their fees. The BLM may have gone overboard, but they were in the right as far as the law goes.

There is a reason permits are required to graze cattle on public land; so that the natural resources of the land do not get depleted, and let’s face it, ranchers are not known for being a very environmentally conscious bunch.
