Moapa Valley Progress

Lynae Barlow

The Valedictorian candidates for the 2014 graduating class at Moapa Valley High School are Lynae Barlow, Cymoni Cooper, and Eric Winzenried. These students represent the very top of the class of this year’s graduates.

Just behind them are two Salutatorian candidates for the class which include Jessie Morwood and Whitney Muns.

These five students took full advantage of the education and activities offered in high school and are now planning for future successes. We caught up with each one of them last week and talked to them about their high school experiences and about what their plans are for the future.

Lynae Barlow said that Friday night home football games were her favorite memory of her high school experience. She loved decorating the school with posters and balloons in a show of school spirit. One of her best memories is of Homecoming games: working on the class float, the late night movie on the field, and powder puff games.

Lanae plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, both the upcoming Summer and Fall terms. She then anticipates serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Originally, she wanted to major in psychologyat college. But after more research, she’s decided she’ll be majoring in study of family life so that she can work with adolescents.

When asked what she sees herself doing in ten years, she responded that as Senior Class President, “I’ll probably be planning and holding our ten year reunion.”

She also hopes to be married with a couple of kids and graduated from college by then.

Lynae is the daughter of Kent and Kay Barlow of Logandale.

Cymoni Cooper

One of the highlights from Cymoni Cooper’s high school experience was a specific softball game. During the last inning of the Senior Night home game the Pirate team had fallen far behind on the scoreboard. Then the tide changed.

“Everybody on the team started hitting like crazy, and we came back to win the game,” she said.

Cooper also has fond memories of playing viola in the Honors Orchestra for the Clark County School District.

“My sophomore year I was able to get second chair for all of Clark County and able to work with a guest conductor,” she said.

The group played Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings.”

Cooper also has plans to serve an LDS mission beginning right after graduation, she hopes.

After returning home from her mission, Cooper wants to attend Brigham Young University, Idaho and major in physical therapy with a minor in music.

In ten years, she sees herself graduated from college. She’d like to be married and starting a family. She also hopes to continue with her music by play in some level orchestras, including perhaps the Mormon Tabernacle Orchestra.

Cymoni is the daughter of Beth and Rob Cooper of Logandale.

Eric Winzenreid

Eric Winzenried most enjoyed playing soccer, participating in National Honor Society, and attending Spanish classes while attending MVHS.

“I’ll miss the atmosphere of a small town because I’m going to Buenos Aires on my mission, and that’s huge,” he said.

Winzenried is excited to be leaving for his LDS mission on August 13.

After returning from this two year missionary service, Winzenried said that he would probably join his brother up at Brigham Young University in Provo. There, he would like to major in mechanical engineering so that he can design car engines.

He loves cars. Eric said that’s what his grandpa did. He picked up that interest from working with him.

As for his ten year goals, Winzenried said, “I see myself married and graduated from my master’s program and working somewhere.”

Eric is the son of Gregory and MaryLee Winzenried of Logandale.

Jessie Morwood

Salutatorian candidate Jessie Morwood said that participation in sports was her favorite experiences at MVHS.

Morwood participated in four different sports during her high school career. She played volleyball her freshman year, soccer and flag football during her senior year, and softball all four years.

She said that soccer was undoubtedly her favorite sport. In addition, MVHS Girls Soccer coach Lisa Cornwall was Morwood’s favorite teacher. She also enjoyed Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, Skull and Bones club, and being part of the royalty for Homecoming this year.

After graduation Morwood plans to get her Associates Degree in Science from Southern Utah University in Cedar City. The school gave her an academic scholarship for $17,000 per year to study there.

After SUU, she’ll transfer to a bigger school to complete a degree in physical therapy, she said.

In ten years, she hopes to be working in Reno or somewhere in Utah as a physical therapist. She’d also study with a minor in business. This would help her as she eventually plans to own her own clinic.

Jessie is the daughter of James and Joedie Morwood of Moapa.

Whitney Muns

When asked what her fondest experiences were at MVHS, Salutatorian Whitney Muns responded, “I loved being on the dance team. That was super fun!”

Some other highlights for Whitney were the extra activities during Homecoming Week and “M” Week. She’ll also miss seeing her friends everyday, she said.

When asked about her immediate plans for the future, Muns said, “First, I’m going to serve an LDS mission.”

After that she plans to attend Utah Valley University in Provo. While there, she wants to major in Deaf Studies, a sign-language program with an emphasis in interpreting.

And where does she see herself in ten years? She hopes to be graduated from college, married, and having kids.

Whitney is the daughter of David and Margie Muns of Moapa.
