It was another big day at the Overton Library on Friday, as the weekly summer reading program got started. The week’s theme was “Sneeze, Boom, Ick!” To follow that theme, local librarians put together a program that focused on sneezing, snot, and germs. There was also a lot of focus on soap.
Librarian April Heath, began the story time by reading about sneezing and snot to a captivated the young audience of about 200 people.
But things got a whole lot sillier when Maggie McMurray and Naomi Harris appeared dressed as the scientist duo of Einstein Von Moustache and Professor Wilhelm Fredrick. The wacky pair started off with several experiments meant to demonstrate the properties of different soaps. At one point, they even exploded a bar of Ivory soap in a microwave oven.
After the demonstrations, the children were able to do their own experiment. Each kid was given a sandwich baggie full of glue, water, and food coloring. The scientists put a squirt of a special solution in each bag and set the children loose to shake up the mixture. The result was that each child created a bag of putty to take home to play with.
Ethan Witter, a participant in the summer reading program, said, “Today’s activity was really cool! I loved it when [the scientists] put the soap in the microwave. Our librarians are the best in the world!”
The activities are hosted every Friday at 11:15 at the Moapa Valley library.
The library is hosting a special activity on Wednesday, June 25. It is a fun puppet show put on by the library district and will be held at 11:15 in the community center next to the library. Everyone is invited to come and have fun!
