YF&R Preparing For Annual Big Buck Contest

The Clark County Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) organization are bringing hunters together once again to have a little friendly competition. The organization is inviting all hunters to enter the 2014 Big Buck Contest.

In this contest, not only do hunters get to enjoy their hunting experience but they can win a gun or other prizes as well. First place prize is a $200 gift card to Ace Hardware.

Individuals that have a buck tag may enter the contest before their season opens. The deadline for archery hunters will be August 10. Muzzleloader hunters’ deadline to enter is September 10. Rifle hunters may enter the contest before October 4.

Each buck’s antlers will be scored by a point system according to height, width, and number of points. The buck that scores the highest number of points wins the competition.

The entry fee is $25. An entry form is being printed in this edition of the Progress and will also be available on the Clark County Nevada Farm Bureau Facebook page. Completed forms can be mailed along with the entry fee to P.O. Box 67 in Logandale. Checks are accepted and may be payable to Young Farmers & Ranchers.

Participants can also submit their entries to Mica Leatham, Spencer Bunker, or Cody Hardy. These members of YF&R will also be the judges of the Big Buck Contest.

Local resident Jacob Jensen won the Big Buck Contest last year with a big 30 inch 4×4.

With this contest, the Young Farmers & Ranchers organization is raising money to help more members to attend the Farm Bureau Conventions. At the conventions they learn about educating the public in agriculture.

The money raised by the Big Buck Contest can also be used for educational agricultural learning. The YF&R is involved in bringing elementary school kids out to the Moapa Valley High School Ag Farm to help educate them in agriculture.

“We will use the money earned for educating people about agriculture,” Leatham said. “Whether it’s sending people to a convention or putting it toward Ag in the Classroom.”
