The theme for the Calvary Community Church Vacation Bible School (VBS) last week was “Backstage with the Bible.” Directors Cein Caldwell and Lisa Wilson chose this particular theme because they’d used it before and thought the music was a lot of fun.

Caldwell said, “There’s all kinds of curriculum to choose from.”

Wilson said she lived in the valley from 2000 – 2007 but has been living in St. George for the past seven years.

Wilson and Logandale resident Nancy Postma opened each VBS session at 5:30 pm, singing songs about the Bible and dancing with the children.

Wilson taught a theme and a scripture each day. On Monday, the children learned they are superstars because they are made in God’s image. On Tuesday, they learned about the 10 commandments. Wednesday’s theme was “Jesus Died on the Cross for Us.” And Thursday’s was “Saved by Grace through Faith.” On Friday, they were told, “Go and Fish for Others.”

After the theme and scripture, Wilson told them facts about the Philippines. Some of the facts she shared are that the Philippines are made up of 7,107 islands with over 200 volcanoes. And the people who live there speak 175 languages.

Some of the attendees brought offerings to donate to One Verse, a division of Wycliffe Bible Translators. There are still 2,200 languages that the Bible hasn’t been translated into, and One Verse has made a goal to translate it into all of those languages by 2025. Over the course of the week, Wilson collected $287 that will all go toward helping One Verse translate verses of the Bible into Isnag, a language spoken in the Philippines.

After everyone met together for Opening, the children were divided into five rotating classes. In the Missions Room, Cindy Soderquist taught the children facts about the Philippines and how to say the day’s verse in Isnag. She had a voice recording and the verse written out on a page for each of them to read along with. Julie Brill taught Storytelling (Bible Stories). Christina Geist taught Crafts. Pastor Jason Ham, Andy Caldwell, and Jane Hart were in charge of Games. Then Snacks and Music were together, with Penny Harris and Marni Brown providing Snacks, while Nancy Postma taught Music.

After the attendees rotated through all of the classes, they closed with more singing and a review of all the scriptures they’ve learned that week. Postma and Wilson would announce a winner for that day’s contest and count the offering money.

Caldwell said they had about 35 volunteers helping out. They were pleased with attendance. According to Caldwell, there were days when more than 50 kids attended.

Pastor Jason Ham said, “I enjoy the kids, and I exceptionally enjoy the kids learning about Bible stories.” He pointed out how important it is for kids and adults to read the Bible. He added that they have a fun time. “It’s good working with the kids, and it’s also good working with the adults.”

The pastor moved here from Albuquerque 16 years ago, but he said that he is originally from Hawaii.

Located at 210 North Anderson in Overton, Calvary Community is a non-denominational Christian church.
