LETTER: “My Kids”

To preface this, you need to know that I am single, have never been married, and don’t have any children of my own. I do, however, teach at Lyon Middle School and have about 150 students per year, your children, whom I endearingly refer to as “MY KIDS.” In fact, I’ve taught here in the valley long enough to claim about 1,500 of your kids as “MY KIDS.”

We have a super hero theme at the middle school this year and I want “MY KIDS” to know that they are my super heroes!
When my Moapa kids were re-routed to Bowler Elementary School Monday afternoon, I decided to head over there to cheer them up and provide a little entertainment. Turns out, I wasn’t needed whatsoever.

All of them were in good spirits and were entertaining themselves just fine. When they were taken over to the Fine Arts building at the Fair Grounds, it looked like they were stuck for the evening. I say “stuck,” but you would never have felt that from “MY KIDS.” They were still in good spirits. There was not one complaint, not one gripe, not one tear. They were very mature and well behaved. They handled the situation much better than I would have if I was their age.

My super heroes don’t end with my Moapa kids. My other kids were anxiously engaged in giving service to those in need. Some brought blankets and food, others were knee and elbow deep in rushing flood waters trying to keep debris out of the street west of Bowler so that water could flow down the grates instead of pooling and creating more flooding. Over the course of two days I saw “MY KIDS” out right and left sandbagging, mucking out homes, rescuing furniture and belongings from flooded homes, cleaning and salvaging mud soaked items, and even babysitting younger children so that adults and others could help at flood sites, etc.

I will never forget when one of “MY KIDS” (and his mom) stopped by the location where I was helping. His mom was busy working with some of the other ladies that were on the premises helping out. He jumped right in and began cleaning up damaged and soiled furniture. When someone asked who he was (because he wasn’t a teenager they recognized), I was pleased to introduce him as “one of MY KIDS!”
I am pleased as punch to call these wonderful middle schoolers, high schoolers, and post-high schoolers “MY KIDS!”
