Public Lands Day will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 27 with a cleanup project of the Logandale Trails area beginning at 8:00 a.m.
The 20-year-old tradition takes place across the country annually and is hosted by federal organizations including the BLM, National Park Service and the US Forest Service. “It’s one day for people to volunteer and clean up, or take care of, or plant things on public land,” said Logandale Trails project organizer Elise McAllister.

McAllister added that this will be the first Public Lands Day to take place in a recreation area.
“It’s usually in a wilderness area or designated area, so that’s kind of cool,” she said.

Clean up efforts will take place at the main trail head. They will include painting the restrooms, tidying up the picnic areas and planting desert plants, McAllister said. Roofing shingles will also be on site and available for anyone with experience and capability, to install them on the roof of the restroom building.

McAllister said volunteers will also clean up primitive camp sites and clean out campfire rings; as well as pick up trash from along the main road.
“Over time, wind blows plastic bags in, we’ll fan out and clean up all that stuff,” she said.
McAllister expects “a great variety of volunteers” including groups from Las Vegas, an ATV club, local scouts and residents.

Following the cleanup the Rotary Club has volunteered to cook burgers and hot dogs beginning around 11:30 a.m., McAllister said.

In appreciation for their service, every volunteer will receive a goody bag with flyers, coupons and a dollar off admission to the Dirty Nasty Mud Races event that will take place near the fairgrounds that same day. Volunteers will also be given a free t-shirt and a one day family pass to a national park.

A scavenger hunt for children will take place and prizes will be awarded for those who finish.
“It should be a lot of fun,” McAllister said.
