Residents of the local communities gathered to participate with the Moapa Valley High School 2014 Homecoming parade and assembly on Thursday, Oct. 16.
Spectators lined the streets around the high school in preparation for the parade. The parade included various floats featuring the choir, cheer squad, nominated royalty, volleyball team, FFA, the grand marshall and more. Individuals and students participating in the parade tossed candy and prizes to cheering spectators and waved from their creatively decorated floats.
Pre-assembly entertainment was provided by MVHS bands and cheer squad in the new gym facility which filled rapidly and buzzed with “Pirate Pride”. The Master of Ceremonies for the program was Student Body President Ethan Seely. Seely welcomed the crowd to the Homecoming celebrations.
MVHS Athletic Director Matt Messer presented a special senior athlete recognition. The senior athletes were escorted by their parents into the gym and were cheered on by the crowd.
The Homecoming Royalty was then introduced by MVHS principal Rod Adams. The crowing of the 2014 MVHS Homecoming Queen and King was enjoyed as the main focus of the assembly. Nephi Boren and Ashley Holmes were crowned as the 2014 king and queen respectively. Members of the queen’s court included Hannah Allen and Heilish Gordon. Runners-up for Homecoming King included Mack Nelson and Stephen Graves.
A slideshow recognized Homecoming Parade Grand Marshall Max Bunnell, a legendary art teacher who taught for many years at MVHS.
After that an alumni cheer competition was held. MVHS alumni were invited to lead the crowd in cheers that were enjoyed while they attended the school in the past. Participants included MVHS alumni from 2014, 1983 and more.
The crowd was then entertained by performances done by the cheer squad and Pirate Motion. A skit was then performed by MVHS teachers who had the whole crowd laughing as they participated in a dance off. Students saw a different side of their academic leaders as they showcased dance moves both original and questionably made up on the spot.
The evening wrapped up with the Pirate fight song led by the MVHS cheerleaders which set the tone for an exciting Homecoming weekend.
