Kicking off MVHS Homecoming 2014 was the traditional Powder Puff football game on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
Teams Blue Thunder and White Lighting competed, coached by members of the MVHS football teams. Entertaining the crowd from the sidelines were a group of male athletes dressed in cheerleader outfits and doing stunts.
MVHS Teacher Dallas Larsen announced the game with humor and quick wit.
“They were pretty evenly matched up,” Assistant Principal Pledger Solomon said of the teams. “I was impressed with the athleticism of the girls that I haven’t seen play football before.”
He added that the girls were hard hitting and quick on their feet.
MVHS freshman runningback Ryan Foster described the female football stars as “tough and rough.” He admired their ability to make plays.
Foster’s teammate, defensive tackle Pierce Kirk, also enjoyed the game from the sidelines.
“It’s a good opportunity for women to play a man’s sport,” Kirk said of powder puff. “I think they’re doing a great job and trying hard.”
The game resulted in a win for the senior/freshman team. The final score was 12-0.
“It’s a fun event,” Solomon said. “The girls are out there playing their hearts out and the boys are goofing off on the sidelines.”
