Preparing Jelly For The Pomegranate Festival

By CATHERINE ELLERTON

Moapa Valley Progress

Two hundred and fifty pounds of sugar, 120 packages of pectin, 30 gallons of pomegranate juice, 2 ½ quarts of lemon juice and 30 cups of Chipotle juice….and Voila! There you have it!

Last week, about 15 members of the Moapa Valley Art Guild gathered at the kitchen at the Logandale Fairgrounds to make the hundreds of jars of Pomegranate Jelly which will be sold at the upcoming Pomegranate Art Festival on November 7-8.

In addition to the Art Guild’s jelly-making efforts, there will be several additional local vendors offering jelly in all sorts of wild and unusual flavors.
At last count over 90 vendors will be present offering unique gifts for the holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and just because. These items are handmade and will include metal work, pottery, jewelry, wood creations, wood pens and knives, painted gourds, crafts and fine art.

The food will include traditional American fast food, pizza, stuffed spuds, roasted corn as well as frozen yogurt and twisted lemonade. In addition raffle tickets will be available for the Art Guild quilt and many items donated by the vendors. The monies from the raffle go to fund the Guild’s Scholarship Program.

As the attendee wanders through the grounds and into the Fine Arts Building they will be entertained by local talent. These programs will be scheduled hourly starting at 10 A.M. and continuing to 4 P.M. Friday and Saturday. Most of those events will be held in the outdoor entertainment area but a few will be heard in the Fine Arts Building. The talent will include The Jason Ham Band, Pre-school drill team, the Grant Bowler Honor Choir and the Nelson Family Band.

This Festival has become a Valley Tradition and promises to continue to be educational, entertaining and offer a weekend of enjoyment and family fun. It is free to the public. However, because of the nature of the fine arts available and the food and entertainment events that will be taking place, the Art Guild requests that dogs, other than Service Dogs, be left home.
